Curricular Practical Training (CPT): Pre-Licensure Program Students
Elective employment or internship CPTs are available to students admitted to the Pre-Licensure Program and have begun coursework.
Purpose
CPT employment experiences for students admitted to the Pre-Licensure Program should explore relationship-based and family focused care by examining caring and healing environments, integrating therapeutic communication, building professional relationships as an interdisciplinary team member, caring for families, and advancing physiologic knowledge.
Eligibility Criteria
- Undergraduate F-1 student admitted and taking classes in the Pre-Licensure Program.
- Currently in good academic standing with a minimum total cumulative GPA of 3.0.
- Enrolled full-time for one academic year at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
- Completed a minimum of 24 residential credits from Minnesota State University, Mankato.
- Has not received an NC grade for NURS 499 during any previous CPT terms.
- Is not repeating a major core course during the term of the CPT request.
- Secured a position as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or a nursing related position providing direct patient care like a Personal Care Assistant (PCA).
- CPT Requests must be submitted through the KIC Portal 2 weeks before the desired employment start date.
Policies
- Eligible students may complete a CPT each fall and spring term while enrolled in the Pre-Licensure Program.
- Eligible students may complete one summer CPT employment experience after starting the Pre-Licensure Program.
- Eligible students must enroll in NURS 499-Individual Study (1cr) for a P/NC grade each term they participate in a CPT employment experience.
- Eligible students must be enrolled in NURS 499 by the first Friday of the requested term.
- Students awarded an NC grade for NURS 499 are ineligible for any future CPT employment experiences.
- Students who become ineligible for a CPT, may have a Student Performance Contract initiated by instructor.
- Students repeating a major core course are ineligible for a CPT request that term.
- CPT experiences are authorized for a specified period, which aligns with the respective term.
- Fall and spring CPTs may only be taken part-time (20 hrs/week or less).
- Summer CPTs may be taken part-time or full-time (21-40 hrs/week).
- Late CPT requests will not be approved.
Nurse Internships
Nurse internships differ from employment experiences working as a CNA or PCA, but they still require international F-1 students to obtain CPT authorization. Students awarded a summer or winter nurse internship in a MN health care facility are required to enroll in NURS 497: Internship (1cr) by the Minnesota Board of Nursing. Students awarded a nurse internship must submit a CPT request following the same procedures.
Start Dates & End Dates
Fall Semester
- The earliest date a student may start a fall CPT is the first day of fall semester.
- The latest date a student may end a fall CPT is the day before the start of spring semester.
Spring Semester
- The earliest date a student may start a spring CPT is the first day of spring semester.
- The latest date a student may end a spring CPT is the last day of spring semester finals week.
Summer Semester
- The earliest date a student may start a summer CPT is the day after spring semester finals week concludes.
- The latest date a student may end a summer CPT is the day before the start of fall semester.
Procedures
Complete the steps in sequential order for CPT authorization.
- Pre-Licensure Program students are responsible for applying and securing a position.
- Upon hire, obtain a job offer letter containing the following information:
- Company name and physical address of employer.
- Contact information for supervisor.
- Number of hours working per week.
- Dates of Employment: start and end dates must align with policy.
- Job title.
- Position description, including an overview of tasks and responsibilities.
- Sample Job Offer Letter available in the KIC Portal.
- Log in to Kearney International Center Portal to initiate a CPT request.
- If this is your first CPT Request, you will be prompted to review the CPT presentation in D2L and complete the CPT quiz.
- Complete the request and enter the following approval information:
- Approver Name: Kasi Johnson
- Approver Email: Kasi.Johnson@mnsu.edu
- Approver Title: Student Advising Director
- Upload the job offer letter, your Nursing, BS degree audit, then submit.
- Once submitted, the request is routed to Kasi Johnson for department approval and course permission.
- If approved, students will receive an email instructing them to register for NURS 499.
- The request is then routed to the KIC.
- Students must be registered for NURS 499 before the KIC can process.
- Immigration advisors will add the authorization to SEVIS and update the student’s I-20.
- The KIC requests an additional 3-5 days for final processing.
- Students will receive an email alerting them of their new I-20.
- Once authorized, students may begin to work and start NURS 499 in D2L.
- Eligible nursing students electing to continue an employment experience beyond the authorized end date, must obtain an updated job offer letter with new employment dates for the subsequent term, and submit a new CPT request through the KIC Portal. Students should return to step 2 of the procedures to initiate the process.
