Naomi Ervin, PhD, RN, PHCNS-BC, FAAN
Dr. Naomi Ervin is a Professor, School of Nursing, College of Health and Human Services, Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, Michigan. She is board certified as a clinical specialist in public health nursing. Dr. Ervin teaching positions have focused on courses in community health nursing practice, management/administration, health promotion and measurement.
Dr. Ervin has held positions in service and academic administration including director of public health nursing for the Chicago Department of Health. From 1997-2007 she held the Decker Chair in Community Health Nursing at the Decker School of Nursing, Binghamton University. The Decker School and Chairperson were established through the Decker Foundation to support educational and health care activities in the region
Dr. Ervin’s advocacy for social justice in low income communities has been evident throughout her education, research, and practice roles. Her research foci have been in the areas of increasing access to nursing care, quality of community health nursing care, and evidence-based public health nursing practice.
Dr. Ervin has developed and tested a model for community health nursing care quality and served as a consultant for cultural competence projects. Her practice has also included clinical nurse specialist at community nursing center for underserved in Chicago.
Dr. Ervin has numerous published articles, books and book chapters. Her contributions to public health nursing have been recognized by the American Nurses Association, American Public Health Association, the Association of Community Health Nursing Educators and the National Academies of Practice.
