Dr. Janice Bell

Dr. Janice Bell currently serves as the founding editor of the Journal of Family Nursing (SAGE), the first peer-reviewed periodical devoted exclusively to family nursing that publishes scholarly work on nursing research, practice, education, and policy issues related to families in health and illness. She has provided live clinical supervision to master's and doctoral level family nursing students and served as Director of the Family Nursing Unit, a faculty practice unit dedicated to education and research at the University of Calgary. Dr. Bell has taught graduate level theory courses about family nursing and family research that included students from a variety of disciplines. 

Her life’s work and clinical scholarship focuses on illness suffering and family healing with an emphasis on:

  • therapeutic conversations with families
  • family interventions in health care
  • suffering and spirituality
  • family intervention research 

She co-developed a clinical model for advanced practice in Family Systems Nursing known as the Illness Beliefs Model. She recently co-authored Beliefs and Illness: A Model for Healing that shows the model in action-a model for healing that examines beliefs of nurse and families and explores therapeutic conversations between health care provider and family members. Dr. Bell currently offers workshops and consultation about illness suffering and family healing to an international community of health care professionals.
