About Dr. Kamphoff

Dr. Cindra Kamphoff (pronounced Camp-off) is the Director of The Center of Sport and Performance Psychology and Professor in Sport & Performance Psychology at Minnesota State University. Her work has been featured in the the New York Times, ESPN the Magazine, and Runner's World Magazine. She is also a member of the Runner's World Magazine Advisory Board.

Dr. Kamphoff completed her Ph.D. in Sport and Performance Psychology and is a leader in her field, serving 3 years on the Executive Board of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology, the premier organization in her field.

Research in Sport and Psychology

Dr. Kamphoff recently is published her first book, Beyond Grit: Ten Powerful Practices to Gain the High Performance Edge, which is an Amazon Bestseller.

Dr. Kamphoff's general research line focuses on two areas: 1) the psychology of running and marathoning, and 2) gender and cultural diversity in sport and physical activity. She has published 18 research manuscripts, 7 book chapters, and has received over $175,000 in grants. Her research has been published in various journals including the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, The Journal of Intercollegiate Athletics, and The International Journal of Sport Science and Coaching.

Consulting Experience

Dr. Kamphoff has roughly 20 years of experience consulting with athletes, teams, and coaches at all levels (youth, high school, university, professional, etc.). She is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (#297) with the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.

Dr. Kamphoff, along with faculty in the Department of Psychology, Theatre, and Music, started the Center for Sport and Performance Psychology that opened in University Square in January 2013. As one of the few centers of it's kind in the US, the Center is working to make a national impact as well as help performers reach their potential in the state and local community.

At The Center, the graduate students work with Maverick athletes as well as high school athletes in the state of Minnesota.

She also operates her own sport psychology consulting practice (www.cindrakamphoff.com) and started the Mankato Marathon Sport Psych Team which she received the Visit Mankato's Volunteer of the Year Award for in 2015. She has a podcast called the High Performance Mindset available on Itunes, Sticher Radio and iHeartRadio.

Professional Contributions and Honors

Dr. Kamphoff received the Dorothy Harris Award from AASP which recognizes the significant contributions of a young professional in the field.

She served as the Research and Practice Division Head with the Association for Applied Sport Psychology and served on the editorial board of the International Journal of Sport Science and Coaching. She also received the NASPE Sport and Exercise Psychology Dissertation Award.

In 2015, she received Visit Mankato's Volunteer of the Year Award for the sport and performance psychology work she does in the community.

Sport/Leisure Interests

Dr. Kamphoff is a competitive marathoner and in 2012 she won Omaha Marathon. She has run the Boston Marathon 5 times and over 15 marathons.
