Scholarships & Financial Assistance

The Department of Social Work provides scholarship and stipend opportunities for qualified BSSW and MSW students each year. All information about scholarships can be found through the university’s Scholarship Finder website. Scholarships are open for application during the early part of the Spring Semester. Stipends have a separate application process that varies depending on the specific program.

 

Annual Department of Social Work Scholarships (awarded each spring).

  • Wayne and Carol Sandee Endowed Scholarship (BSSW) - $1,500
    • Must be US resident who is an under-represented student
    • Have declared social work as a major and have completed SOWK 215 and 212 (or equivalent courses), or has been admitted to the BSSW program
    • Enrolled full-time during the academic year of award payout
  • Bill Anderson New Student Scholarship (BSSW and MSW, 1 each ) - $1,500
    • The Bill Anderson New Student Scholarship recognizes one BSSW student and one MSW student who plan to pursue a career as a generalist (BSSW) or advanced social work practitioner (MSW)

      • Must be student planning to enroll in the BSSW program with high school, transfer or cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
      • Must be enrolled in the MSW program with cumulative undergraduate GPA 3.0 or higher
  • Bill Anderson Leadership Scholarship (BSSW and MSW, 1 each) - $1,750
    • The Bill Anderson Leadership Scholarship recognizes one BSSW student and one MSW student who demonstrate a commitment to generalist or advanced generalist practice through leadership at the University or in their community. Student uses leadership skills to promote the profession’s goals and values, to affirm difference and diversity, to advocate for human rights and social, economic, and environmental well-being, or through research and or policy practice.

      • Must be planning to enroll in the BSSW program with high school, transfer or cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
      • Must be enrolled in the MSW program with cumulative undergraduate GPA 3.0 or higher
      • In addition to the required cover letter addressing leadership skills, applicants must submit a letter of support attesting to their leadership skills
  • Department of Social Work Alumni & Faculty Scholarships (BSSW and MSW) - Up to $500
    • Must be BSSW student (admitted to the major) or admitted MSW students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • MN Social Service Association – Region IX Scholarships (2 for BSSW and 2 for MSW) - $1,500 each
    • Must be admitted to the Social Work BSSW or MSW programs
    • Preference is given to students with demonstrated leadership, community or other volunteer service, and other social service experience
  • Social Work Study Abroad Scholarships (BSSW and MSW) - Up to $500
    • Must be social work major at Minnesota State University, Mankato and participating in a Department of Social Work International/Study Abroad Trip or Exchange program
  • MSW Scholar Award (MSW) - Up to $500
    • Must be MSW graduate student in good academic standing
    • Submit a scholarly paper that examines a social work issue by drawing from a body of scholarly literature
  • MSW Social Justice Award (MSW) - $1,000
    • Must be MSW graduate student in good standing with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
    • Demonstrated work to further social and/or economic justice issues, particularly with diverse or under-served populations
    • Planning to conduct their field practicum in the upcoming summer session

Title IV-E Child Welfare Training Stipends (BSSW majors & MSW students)

Southern MN Behavioral Health Initiative (MSW students)

  • Minnesota State University, Mankato partners was awarded a four-year grant in 2017 by the Health Resources and Services Administration(HRSA) to expand the behavioral health workforce in southern Minnesota.
  • This initiative is open to students that have been admitted to the MSW Program and are entering their specialization year of practice.
  • Each academic year (through 2020-21), six stipend recipients are selected to participate in this program.
  • Stipend recipients receive financial support and professional development opportunities, in addition to practicum placements at selected partner agencies.
