High School Preparation

To prepare for the rigorous nursing curriculum, high school students are encouraged to take plenty of math and science courses. If available, enroll in subjects like biology, anatomy & physiology, organic chemistry, microbiology, statistics, and psychology. These courses will not only help you strengthen your foundational knowledge, but they will also help you develop effective time management and study skills.

Successful nurses also need to have excellent communication, reasoning, and critical-thinking skills. Take coursework that challenges you and find opportunities to develop your reading, writing and discussion skills. High school students can gain real world experience by completing a nursing assistant course, working or volunteering in a health care facility, and interviewing or shadowing a nurse.
