Prerequisite Guide

Dental Hygiene has prerequisite courses in three distinct areas, with some courses that must be completed before applying to the program and others before beginning the program the following fall.

Prerequisites

Five of these courses (including DHYG 100 OR DHYG 101) must be completed prior to applying to the program, and the others before beginning the program.

• COMM 100 Fundamentals of Communication (3 credits)
  • Or COMM 102 Public Speaking (3 credits)
• DHYG 100 Perspectives in Dental Hygiene (1 credit)
  • Or DHYG 101 Introduction to Dental Professions (1 credit)
• ENG 101 Foundations of Writing & Rhetoric (4 credits)
• FCS 140 Introduction to Nutrition (3 credits)
  • Or FCS 242 Nutrition for Healthcare Professionals (3 credits)
• PSYC 101 Introduction to Psychological Sciences (4 credits)
• SOC 101 Introduction to Sociology (4 credits)
  • Or SOC 150 Social Problems (4 credits)
• SOC 202 Introductory Social Statistics (4 credits)
  • Or STAT 154 Elementary Statistics (4 credits)

Science Prerequisites

Three of these courses must be completed before applying to the program, and the other before beginning the program.

• BIOL 201 Anatomy & Physiology I (4 credits)
• BIOL 202 Anatomy & Physiology II (4 credits)
• BIOL 271 Principles of Microbiology (4 credits)
• CHEM 106 Chemistry of Life Process I (3 credits)
  • Or CHEM 111 Chemistry of Life Process II (5 credits)

Dental Hygiene Prerequisites

One of these courses must be enrolled in at the time of application and completed that spring semester and the others must be completed before beginning the program.  NOTE – DHYG 223 is not offered in summer and you will likely need to enroll in more than one of these courses the semester you apply in order to start the program the following fall. It is recommended to have DHYG 219, DHYG 223, and DHYG 225 completed by the end of the spring semester you apply to the program.  

• DHYG 219 Head and Neck Anatomy and Histology – (2 credits)
• DHYG 223 Pharmacology – (3 credits)
• DHYG 225 Oral Anatomy – (2 credits)

Dental Hygiene Application

• Applications are due January 15^th of each year. Admission to the program will be granted to 30 applicants to start the program the following fall semester (up to 10 of these students will be granted admission into the dual track Advanced Dental Therapy Master’s program).
