Nursing Internship Course

NURS 497: Internship (1 credit)

This course provides clinical based learning opportunities to encourage application of theory and research-based knowledge in clinical practice. Students will engage in experiences to enhance the development of their professional nursing role.

• In order to register for this course, students must have obtained a summer or winter internship position in a MN health care facility.

Winter Nursing Internship

Students completing a winter internship will register for NURS 497 under the subsequent spring term, though the course dates will run from mid-December through January.

The Spring schedule is not available for viewing until early October. Please wait until that time before beginning the appropriate Registration Steps below.

Summer Nursing Internship

Students completing a summer internship will register for NURS 497 under the summer term. The course runs for 10 weeks beginning the first full week of June, until the second week of August.

Registration Steps

Visiting Student

You are a Visiting Student if you are studying nursing at another Minnesota State college or university. In this case, you do not need to apply for admission to our university. Using your StarID/password you can begin registering for this course by following the instructions below. If you are not a Visiting Student, refer to the instructions for a Non-Degree Seeking Student.

1. Login to E-Services using your Star ID/password. Attempt to enroll in NURS 497 for Spring or Summer term to trigger the creation of your 8-digit Minnesota State Mankato Tech ID in the upper right corner.
2. Obtain course permission from the School of Nursing.
   • Email the School of Nursing to request registration permission for NURS 497.
   • In the email, include the following: first & last name, 8-digit Mankato Tech ID, College/University currently enrolled, preferred phone number and agency where you will complete your internship.
   • Wait for authorization email reply, then you may proceed to register for NURS 497.
   • Please anticipate 2-3 business days for authorization. Additional course sections will be opened as needed.

Non-Degree Seeking Student

If you are currently enrolled at a private, out of state or other non-Minnesota State college or university, please follow the steps below to apply and register for NURS 497 as Non-Degree Seeking Student.

1. Complete the Online Application to Minnesota State University, Mankato for spring or summer term.
   • In the Major tab (Step 6) select Complete courses, but not a degree.
2. Upon receiving admission to the University, login to E-Services using your Star ID/password. Follow the Registration Instructions and attempt to enroll in NURS 497 under the Spring or Summer term to trigger the creation of your 8-digit Minnesota State Mankato Tech ID in the upper right corner.
3. Obtain course permission from the School of Nursing.
   • Email the School of Nursing to request registration permission for NURS 497.
   • In the email, include the following: first & last name, 8-digit Mankato Tech ID, College/University currently enrolled, preferred phone number and agency where you will complete your internship.
   • Wait for authorization email reply, then you may proceed to register for NURS 497.
