IDEAs in Action
The College of Allied Health and Nursing is proud to recognize the work our students, faculty, and staff accomplish to elevate Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility. Here are a few examples of IDEAS in Action:
Culturally Responsive Communication series
Kari Sween, American Sign Language (ASL) assistant professor and Joel Sween, ASL adjunct professor, with the Department of Speech, Hearing and Rehabilitation Services, joined around 100 students, faculty, staff, and community members for a conversation about the deaf and hard of hearing community. Topics included creating an inclusive classroom for those who are deaf or hard of hearing and serving clients who are deaf or hard of hearing. The full conversation is available here.
Equity Engagement Space opens
To serve as a place for people of color, LGBTQIA+, and historically excluded groups and co-conspirators, the College of Allied Health and Nursing has opened the Equity Engagement Space. The Space was intentionally designed to create a place where unapologetic, healing, and transformative conversations can take place.
Adapted Floor Hockey Exhibition at Hockey Day Minnesota
An adapted floor hockey game contributed to the Hockey Day MN festivities, showcasing players from West High School, East High School, Minnesota State Mankato, and the community. Hockey in Minnesota is for all student-athletes, even those with disabilities. Dr. Sue Tarr and the Developmental Adapted Physical Education (DAPE) program work to prepare future educators to ensure physical literacy in K-12 students with or without disabilities. "Hockey is for everyone." - Dr. Sue Tarr
Equity and Inclusion Task Force
During the 2021 Academic Year, an Equity and Inclusion task force was created to bring students, faculty, and staff into the discussion about how what the College can do to make a meaningful impact on diversity, equity and inclusion. The task force reported on - and began implementing - action items specific to the mission statement and policy action plans, professional and curriculum development, reducing achievement gaps in courses, and community outreach.
Please self-nominate or nominate a student, faculty, or staff member to be recognized for work focused on Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and/or Accessibility in allied health using this form.
