Module 1

Module 1 contains seven separate Sections.

This course module provides an overview of nursing care linked with individuals and families facing a serious illness, dying processes, and death. Terms associated with patient and family health and illness are described and the importance of family engagement is stressed. Essential caring concepts relevant to serious illness, dying processes, and death are identified, defined, and explored (i.e., communication, educational provision).

Module 1 Learning Objectives:

  • Differentiate among concepts aligned with serious illness, end-of-life care, and individual/family support needs.
  • Identify intentional supportive nursing roles to use when caring for individuals and those close to them when facing serious illness and at the end-of-life.
  • Manage personal fears or anxieties when caring for persons and those close to them as they encounter changes linked with end-of-life occur.
  • Display confidence in open communication with persons and those close to them at the end-of-life.
  • Support and value individual and family needs and decisions related to changing physical, psychological, emotional, and social conditions.

Section 1: Societal Perspectives of Death

Goal: Understand how philosophical and American perspectives can change our thought about death and dying. Take into thought cultural and relational concepts of dying.

Section 2: Diversity of Care Needs

Goal: Understand diversity that may be caused by color, culture, what kind of family you were raised in, your religion, marriage, or any other facet that could affect the care you or someone you love receives.

Goal: Understand how to communicate effectively with our patients and families so that we can provide them with the best information regarding their care. Communication is also important regarding interprofessional team communication. Understanding this is a core component to working as a team.
