This section was put online for anyone who wished to share their memories or feelings about John. Scatman continues to be an influence to individuals who continue to discover his music, some who were born after he died. His legacy lives on.

Chatting with John - Judy Kuster 12/6/99

My favorite memory of John was from February 1, 1998, when he had agreed to "chat" with teens for an hour in the Stuttering Home Page chatroom I created. He had successfully practiced getting into the chatroom, but for some reason that evening was unable to. Shortly before the scheduled time, John emailed me, giving me his home phone number and I relayed questions to him, typing his answers as quickly as I could. He spent an hour with us that night, encouraging the teens attending and expressing his sincere love for all of them. Before we said good-bye he also treated me with some of his scatsing over the phone.

From the Belgium Selfhelp Organization vzw BeSt - Gert Reunes 12/6/99

When I received the e-mail with the news Scatman isn't here anymore on earth, I went to my room and I played his music very loud. I was thinking what he was saying in his lyrics -- they are so strong that I felt real cold. Although I never met him, he was for me an example. On 7 december 99 the Belgium commercial TV station (1 million viewers) heard about Scatman on the news. They also showed some clips of him on TV. They mentioned also that he was an example for us stutterers. We will always remember him! He was not only a good scatter but most of all he was an example for may stutterers all over the world! Sorry for my English, I cannot express the way I want to express it, but I hope he will be in many heart like mine.

True creative artistry is immortal Paul the Poundin' Piano Player 12/6/99

Scatman was a musical giant, and one who achieved immortality through his true creative artistry. It is a rare talent to bring to life an expression that truly transcends one's limitations of time and place. Scatman achieved this, and while he may not be physically with us, his legacy for the ages will endure. He also possessed the gifts of humanity and caring, which endowed him with a greatness of person, and a unique stature in which the very best of art and life united in a beautiful vision all his own.

He's the Scatman... Elson Trinidad 12/7/99

I'm not a stutterer, but hey, I've been known to stammer on occasion...like John once said, "Everybody stutters one way or the other..." ain't that the truth!

I must say he himself made me aware about people who stutter, that it's not a serious mental condition or anything. I remember when we talked on the phone, at times he'd apologize for his stuttering, but it didn't bother me at all...I seemed to see right through that...all I thought was, "Hey, I'm talkin to the Scatman!"

John was a rare celebrity, one who didn't have to hide behind pretense or superficiality. Sure he had a lot of money, but he lived rather modestly for a pop star and it was quite clear that the material things in life didn't really matter that much to him. Everything about him was real and down-to-earth. I don't think there's anyone who can say anything bad about him. and John never said anything bad about anybody. He sung about a "Scatman's World," which some may scoff and think of as childish or idyllic, but John gave us a vision, a vision of what could be if we opened our hearts and minds. John may not be around anymore, but there will always be a "Scatman's World." Or at least we should all be working towards one.

John Larkin never stuttered. Because every word he said was worth repeating.

It's funny how life goes. One minute you're riding the train in France, listening to the radio and suddenly you hear, "SCA-BA-BIBBLY-O-BOP....I'M THE SCATMAN!" The next minute you're mourning the loss of a friend.

Goodbye, Scatman. Have fun up there scatting with Satchmo. Everybody jam.

Elson Trinidad

Remembering a friend Gina Waggott 12/9/99

I first got in contact with John in 1997 at a particularly difficult time in my life, especially with regard to stuttering. I hated it... often denied I stuttered and did everything I could to hide it. Until one day I heard those immortal words... "Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop!" and I've never stopped listening to them since. When I became friends with John I told him things I'd never told anyone else before.... all my fear, anger, and isolation came pouring out, and John did something I never thought a "popstar" would do - he listened. And he listened well. That was three years ago. Nowadays I have overcome stuttering on several levels - the first one being self-acceptance... a gift John gave to me, which I'm going to treasure for the rest of my life. I never met a more beautiful man than John Larkin. He was, and still is.... my hero and friend. He touched more lives than he will ever know. I love and miss him.

A truly unique guy John C. Harrison 12/14/99

I didn't know John well. But I was totally overwhelmed by his artistry, modesty, and accessibility as a person when he performed his Saturday morning concert at the NSP convention in San Diego. Then I had a chance to spend more personal time with him at the Buffalo convention when we all went to Niagra Falls for an evening of fun at the casino. What struck me about John was that, though I hadn't known him for long, I felt like I'd known him my entire life. I'll really miss him.

Memorial Celebration Annie Bradberry 12/14/99

The week that John died is such a blur that I am not sure what I told you and what I didn't so bare with me as I bring you up to date. When I got there the Friday before he died his wife Judy told me that John had not communicated much in the last four days. That I should not expect much of a response from him. I walked in and said hi John and he smiled back and said hi Annie. We all laughed, smiled and cried. The rest of my visit was beautiful and I will never forget these last moments. I will cherish them always.

Sunday was the memorial celebration for John. Also attending was Ira Zimmerman, Vanna Sivilay, Peter Nicks, Peter Lew, Ralph Kessler, Linnea Eades and all the way from Germany, ISA president Thomas Krall. Thomas called me on Thursday and expressed his desire to come. He and John had the chance to form a friendship during many of John's trips to Europe. I told him my home was open and on Friday he confirmed that he was coming. I was soon filled with mix feelings of sadness and happiness that I would have the opportunity to get to know Thomas better, but I wish in difference circumstances. He in fact felt the same. His fax to me confirming the trip had a smiley face with a half smile and half frown.

Thomas came in Saturday evening and together with my family we went to the memorial celebration on Sunday.

Sunday was one of the most wonderful days of my life. There were tables set up outside and there were scheduled speakers. After that there was an open mike where others shared their memories. The man who ran the ceremonies began with John's favorite story which was a stuttering joke...it went ........

John went into a bar (in his drinking days) and said to the bartender. I would l-l-like a s-s-scotch please. The bartender responded with c-c-coming r-r-right up. John said - hey are you making fun of me? The bartender said no, I stutter too! Then another man walked up to the bar and ordered a beer without any stuttering. The bartender responded with - coming right up. John said, hey, you were making fun of me! The bartender responded by saying....no...I was making fun of him!

It was a beautiful way of beginning the day. We all laughed and smiled in rememberence of John. When I had my turn to speak I said to the group... "There are not many places that I feel proud to be a stutterer. Today is one of those days. As I have been walking around introducing myself to all of you and I stutterered I felt a part of that very special part of John who I know all of you love".

I wish you could have seen the expression in their eyes when I stuttered. It was not compassion or anything like that. It was love and admiration. I wish you were there.

I have always felt at home in the Larkin home, but Sunday was more than that.

That house was filled with so much love that people came together and I truly didn't want the day to end. Over 100 people came and went.

It truly was a mixed day of emotions.

Memories NEVER fade . . . especially pleasant ones!

Handsome man with a big smile . . . I'm sure he will be missed - but ALWAYS remembered. Inspirations1999

I'll Miss John - Marty Leisner 12/18/99

I found John to be a funny, warm, caring individual who was fun to be around. I've talked with him a few times, we seemed to have a talent to make each other laugh ;-) He'll be missed by me -- I wish I could have spent more time with him.

Hey John - Dave Carless, Tucson Chapter, N.S.A. 12/27/99

Hey John, I`ve often wondered if when we get to the "GATE" in Heaven if Saint Peter would say something like "HHHHello JJJohn, WWelcome to HHHaeaven, yyou kknow you aaall wwere the rrright ones aall TThe tttime." Hey let us know O.K. We will miss you BIG TIME. DDDDave

Speaking the truth, and only the truth. Nora O'Connor 12/30/99

When I think Of John Larkin I think of straight up truth. From his heart, his soul, his eyes, his smile, and to words left unsaid but loudly spoken all the same ... John was 100% pure. From our first contact via mail in 1992 -- to when I heard John's key note speech at the NSP convnetion in San Diego it was all about truth. He never candy-coated the way his stutter shaped his life, from the down right ugly shit that tore him up to the emerging beauty that grew stronger everyday within him. Oh, I love hearing people sharing their stories of how they have become one with their stutter ... but I'd rather hear about the dirt, the truth that got them to that point. That's the way John spoke. Truth was all John ever spoke to me. And that's all I'll ever speak. I'll always remember the night I heard the Scatman on the radio in my beat up 1980 Honda one late summer night in 1995. I was tweaking out on the drug that was suppresing my feelings of truth for who I had become and what I was dying from ... and John emerged from the radio ... and I heard loud and clear, "As a matter of fact don't let nothin' hold you back. If the Scatman can do it brother so can you." John was with me that night ... and many nights that followed. Thank you John for showing me the way to finding my truth, and now I can spread it to those who need to hear it as much as I needed to hear it from you. There has never been a keynote speaker at a stuttering convention that has told the truth as hard as John did in 1995 ... people need to hear the truth. From truth we can emerge and find some level of acceptance and empowerment. If the Scatman can do it, so can Nora. Peace xoxo

Scatman John - Peter Hawkes 1/4/00

I am so sad to hear of his death. I didnt really know too much about him. But he was obviously a man who wasnt ashamed to admit and confront his stammering. A sad loss in our stammering community, my thoughts are with his family and all his friends and close fans. Pete

NSA Stutterers Hall of Fame - Ira Zimmerman 7/5/00

Having just returned from the National Stuttering Association's Convention, I can report that John "Scatman" Larkin was inducted in their Stutterers Hall of Fame. Texan JW Gregory, who also passed away earlier this year, came up and funded the idea of Stutterers Hall of Fame. I'm sure that John would have greatly appreciated this honor as he did when the National Council on Communicative Disorders approved my nomination of him for an award. Having personally known John and how humble a person he was, I know that he found it gratifying that anyone thought that he was a role model for them. It is one of life's truths that we all must die someday. John overcame so many challenges in his life. He certainly died too young in his 50s because of lung cancer. Perhaps that was the price he had to pay for all those years entertaining audiences in smokey jazz clubs both in the U.S. and around the world.

I'm giving in, not giving up - Kiran. 1/10/01

Hey. I've never heard of the "Scatman" in my life before. Its just now after I've read some letters from his fans, I realised "why do i suffer from this?". You rule dude. One more thing. When you sing you don't stutter. So these days, I sort of sing when I speak so I dont stutter. I should make my own album haha. Peace.

As some of you, I only realised Scatman John died today. I enjoyed his music in his heyday, especially Scatmans World. I thought about him a few months ago and since managed to obtain the single, which I play constantly. I never knew much about him until now, but now I admire him for all his achievments. He will be long remembered as long as people like ourselves continue to play his amazing tunes. Here's to you John...............

Volmar Correa Vieira - 3/17/02

Scatman music sounds very cool .. I never heard a sound like that..!! Scatman's music makes me feel "still alive and kicking". Only today I realized about Scatman's death here on this website. Pity Scatman is not among us anymore, but we are in luck his music will stay forever. Thank you very much, John Larkin.

Dutch - 5/11/02

I will allways remember his songs, it has allways combined with my time in school and a large part of my teenage years. He gained my respect after an interview on dutch television were he explained why he made songs, and just the way how calmly he was talking and joking inbetween I could see there was nothing snobby about this guy. He used his handicap for something nobody else before did and he even used his talents to help people out not just making money. I was shocked to hear he passed away, remember I heard the news 2 years later on the radio after they played one of his songs.

Thanks Scatman for your great songs and for the fond memories of those times, you had my respect then and you have it now.

ben lewis - 5/12/02

I unfortunatly never had the opportunity to the scatman, but i have always loved his scattin' lyrics, and his songs have always held a special place in my heart, their pure unadulterated joy was there for us all to behold, remeber, if the scatman can do it, so can you. May god rest his soul.

I will find the way to honor him with some of my work, my webpages, software programs, I will include his memory in them. If only he could have known what his songs mean to me. I wish I was able to thank him.

From Giles Towler, June 18, 2002

Scatman John has inspired me through his artistry to learn the mystical ways of "scat". I am currently teaching myself and have managed to pull off some tricky scat moves such as the "skibbidy bee ba da ba daskibda!" and last night I even managed the skab ba dee bada skadaba bibbidy ski ba da!". One day I hope to appear at the scat world championships and display my ability for all the world to see. It will not be easy, and as I have already found out the road to scat nirvana is a long and hard one, but I am sure that with practice I too will be able to achieve the greatness of Scatman John.

Francis, in Brazil. - 6/28/02

His song was just so positive... I have so many great memories, and it was really shocking to learn that he's dead... His songs remind me of friendship, of friends I have no contact with anymore, but who are in my heart... friends like Maggie... Well, positive people always leave such positive legacy... Make a good party up there, Scatman! Your sound will always be playing down here, reminding us of great friends...

A great pity to have heard of John Larkin's passing away, and ashamed to admit that I only became aware of it today. The words of the Scatman's music are still truly inspirational, and its touching to see so many people sharing their positive feelings about him.

Andrew Sanders, Australia - 15 October 2002

I was sitting down doing some work at my desk in the middle of the night, and going through some mp3's on my archaeic laptop from a cd collection which is long lost and buried and stumbled upon a couple of Scatman John's songs.

I realised my ability to scat along (and sing along) had dropped, and decided to refresh my memory of the lyrics.

I have many fond memories associated with his songs of some very good times in my life, and prior to finding out he is no longer with us was looking at a few pictures of him, a sharp dressed jazz singer who delved into many genre's of music and wondered how awesome it would have been to see him in concert.

I continued to read on about how popular his hits were, and wondered why there was only a small amount of information about him on the internet, but ignored that and went on to wonder how cool it would be to see this guy live. The contrast of a rather old-school jazz singer look and modern equipment with electronic vibes and pulses intertwined with his uniquely toned voice would be breath taking and entertaining to no end.

I was a tad concerned when I noticed what I thought was an error on the page when they listed "Who was Scatman John" as a subject header, and then noted the print up the top of the page stipulating his passing. Although my dream of seeing him live was destroyed, but he will live on in my generation, and hopefully a fair many others.

Damian Lappin, UK - 31 October 2002

The first time I saw the Scatman Video, my jaw dropped. This was so radical, an 40 plus guy being so cool. The more I learn about the scatman, the more I miss him. John, you touched my soul. Rest in peace, you are sadly missed.

Stephen Dixon, England, 2 November 2002

Well, I have only just found out that he is dead and I feel as though a piece of my past has been removed. I live in England now but I used to live in South Africa. Me, my brother and his friends always used to listen to Scatman's music. Within the last 30 minutes I had just finished downloading "I'm the Scatman!" and whilst listening to it, it brought back happy memories from when I used to live in South Africa. I then wanted to find a site to download "Scatmans World" and I came across this site. And I cannot believe that the man that gifted me with these memories is not with us anymore. My feelings go out to anybody who knew John and anyone who felt they had been helped in some way by John. I loved him, and I still do and I always will. Even though I don't stutter, he gave me some good memories which I will treasure and that will stay with me.

Brent De Young, Attorney at Law , Seattle, Washington - 27 November 2002

I was in Moscow, Russia opening new businesses after the fall of Communism in 1994, trying to build Capitalism, when I first heard Scatman John's music. t was unbelievably popular! You couldn't go two blocks without hearing some cafe or shop playing it! I was surprised that it wasn't as popular in the USA, but I soon found out that there were many other excellent US artists that had found fame in Europe before they were discovered in America. Go figure... Scatman was worshipped in Russia! They loved his music so much. I am a musician myself, a sax player, in addition to being a criminal and immigration attorney in Washington State and in Russia. I will be having a New Year's party in Moscow and I have already programmed the music. The entire program is starting with "Scatman's World". Everybody knows it and loves it. Rest in Peace Scatman. You definitely made a difference through your life. We would be much poorer if we had not known your name.

Sid Crowe, Canada - January 14, 2003

Ever since I heard his music I have always loved it and remembered it. I was remembering it again, and felt sad that he had passed on far too soon, so I did a search for him on the internet. Then I found this website, and so many nice wishes for Scatman John on it. Most are from Europe, where it seems people like you more for who you are, and don't mind if you're a little older. I am writing you from Canada, where it was hard for me to find "Scatman's World" CD, but eventually I got it. Sure, Scatman got a music video and a hit song a little late, but that made him all the more a cool guy. I am not prejudiced against a person's age, and I was in my twenties when I got the Scatman's CD, and I found his messgae to be REAL, even though some people thought it was corny. I remember him always and was happy to find so many people with a nice word for Scatman John. Bless you all and Scatman too.

Edson Harada from Brazil - 14 January 2003

Nao acredito... Estamos em 2003 e descobri hj, que John Larkin faleceu em 99!!! Eu amava esse cara!!! As músicas dele eram empolgantes!!! Adeus Scatman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ross from Australia - 29, 2003

i love scatman john sooo much, i listen to his album's everyday, i go to church and tell all the people i meet about john and his scatting, they say that it's better than christianity and would gladly change there religion to "scat". I often sit on a milkcrate and think about what he said in the song "quiet desperation" and fantasise by hugging myself and thinking warm feelings of children. i love children so much, maybe even more so than john himself but i know that's hard thing to do, because i know he loved children so much. peace out from scatland :)

Mateo Garcia, USA-California, March 5, 2003

I forget how i found out about the Scat Man. I think i heard him for the first time when i was 7 years old in 1995 when Im the Scat Man was released. It wasn't until 6 years later in 2001 that I was sitting at my computer one day browsing on the internet looking at music files when i noticed one called "Scat Man". I downloaded it and from right then and right there my passion for music has changed as has my outlook on life. The Scat Man inspired his words how "every body stutters one way or the other, so check out my message to you as a matter a fact don't let nothing hold you back if the Scat Man can do it so can you". Those words changed me, after listening to that I had the feeling inside me that there was nothing i couldn't accomplish and that nothing would ever hold me back from doing what i wanted to do. In Scat Man's World "everybody's born to compete as he chooses, but how can someone win in winning means that someone loses""I want to be a human being not a human doing, the source of my intention isn't crime prevention my intention is prevention of the lie". I got the feeling that we all are our own selves and that there is nothing the will hold me back. If there is one Hero in my life it would have to be John Larkin. Yet then one day during the Summer of 2001 I was looking for information on the Scat Man on Yahoo. I found a memorial website I had no idea that he had died in 1999. As soon as i found that out I played all my Scat Man songs as loud as i could. And everyday on the the day of his death December 3, 1999 I salute him by playing his music everywhere I go. There will always be a hole in music for me for I know that nothing will ever match what John Scat Man did. So Scat Man when you talk to me I see the world a different way, I see it by people's souls not their color.Later man and keep on calling for a Scat Man's World

Courage, Wisconsin, USA, March 13, 2003

I'm a 6th grade student in Wisconsin. In my music class, my music teacher plays his song Scatman all the time. She never told us that John Larkin was dead. I'm sad to hear that, but I want to know more about him. I found your site and I'm glad I did. Thanks for making your website about John.

Jeffery Nigel, UK, March 27, 2003

When I was growing up, 'Scatman' was one of my (and my friend's) favourite songs. We are truly sorry to only now hear of the death of John 'Scatman' Larkin. RIP Scatman - your legacy will live on.

19 year old boy from Norway, April 19, 2003

I`ve heard obout John scatman before, but I never really listened to his songs...untill today. I was watching television, when i suddenly saw the Scatman video. For the first time I listened to his lyrics, and i was amazed. I went on the internet to find out more about him, and here I am. His lyrics in the "scatman" and the "scatman world" songs told me more than any other artists/bands out there put together. His lyrics are really deep. He must have been a wise man.

Gar and Brian, Ireland, April 20, 2003

We are really big fans of Scatman John and love the way he used to scat. We are hoping to bring out a tribute song for him on the 5th anniversary of his death - a cover version of his classic "I'm a Scatman." May scatting live on forever.

Marcus Gasslander, April 28, 2003

He was bigger then life it self. In all his wisdomn our lord took him. We have to be thankfull for the time he was walking among us here on earth. may he live on in our minds and soul. scat on all you partypeople out there. Be Bop be dop

Kristian from Sweden, April 28, 2003

I had no idea Scatman had passed away until today. This is a very sad day for me. He inspired millions with his scat and his smile, yet he kept his feet on the ground, he knew where i came from. He took the time to help people, sending love vibes through his scatting. And that is why I'd like to say be-ba-loobedi-bo-bap to you, John. Be-ba-loobedi-bo-bap.

Latvia, May 22, 2003

If Scatman can do gonna so can I...anyway and anytime. I remember John's performance here in Riga - 1-st September 1995 and way how he meeted this town - Superstar (that time) - alone with case in his traditional clothes and hat - with little smile on his face and great goodness in his mind - it's unforgottable - man who must be called - HUMAN. He gave too many for all of us, for people and I think - he's never passed away, he's never gone - he's only getting out for a while - he''ll be back in his songs and lyricks he leaved to us... Take your time - JOHN

Ren Panelo from Phillipines, May 27, 2003

hi! i'm a very big fan of his & his music ever since i was in high school. dance music is not really that popular here were i live (i'm filipino) compared to such places as europe & japan & the like. but i guess i could say i'm one of those kids people here usually consider as "weird" or "eccentric" or "quirky" or whatever have you due to the kind of things i like. in my case, i love dance music.... A LOT. not just dance music but even old-school jazz & big band music & all that stuff as well. & it's one of the main things that got me drawn into scatman john's songs in the first place. i really taught he was cool. the way he does all that 'scatsinging' of his & all that stuff. plus his music is always so happy & upbeat & uplifting at the same time, & how deeply profound his lyrics actually are, & how really true---to me they tell a lot mostly on how life is really supposed to be lived, what life should really be in the first place. & if his words ring true back then, they still ring true even now, & i bet they'll always ring true for many more years to come.... especially with the whole thing that's been going on in the world these days, & they're as relevant as they'll always be. & it's really funny & hard to believe & yet sad at the same time to only know more about him 3 years after his demise. i really thought he's still alive... no wonder i haven't heard much about him nor any of his future plans & works lately. because there'll never be. he will forever pass on as one of the greatest musical legends of our time. right now i really miss him, terribly. i have his 2nd album, "everybody jam", & i was hoping if i could still find a copy of his 1st album here, because for some reason i was never able to grab one at the time it was on sale. i love every song on his 2nd album... in fact it's very funny to think that a while ago i played it again & over again & danced to it, my soul feeling refreshed like it have never been before after quite some time since i last played it. i will forever miss him, may God be with him always, wherever he is right now. i don't want to think of him as 'dead' since to me he'll always be alive in our hearts & in our thoughts & in his music & all his messages through the lyrics he wrote. & just finding out that when he was still alive he was actually known to be a stutterer with a very remarkably unique talent---that of turning his liabilities into his greatest & best assets---made my respect for him grow more. to me he's one great musical genius, he's definitely one-of-a-kind, & i bet there's no one ever as remarkably talented & unique as scatman john. the fact that as popular as he was, he was also among the humblest celebrities ever known, touching lives in any way & bringing inspiration & hope to all those who have been touched by him & his music. now i respect him more than ever before. i wish i could have at least met him in person or something. i wish i could have at least talked to him. mr. larkin, wherever you are right now, i'm very sure you're just around looking at us here right now, like from that song of yours called "the invisible man"---we may not see you but you can definitely see us. (funny now that i think about it further.) i hope you're reading this, sir, & i would like you to know how much your music has touched my life in a great way, & how it helps keep me afloat despite myself & keeps rejuvenating my soul even until now. thank you very much for everything. for the inspiration you have given me. for the music & all. for sharing your unique talent to the world. for touching all of our lives, not just mine but everyone else especially those who admired you & respected you & were inspired by you by the way you lived your life here on earth. there will never be anyone just like you, i bet, but i'm very sure you'll soon be a very great influence to the future generations for many years to come. i'll never forget you, sir. i will always remember you. i hope you're having a great time jamming with the Lord in heaven right now. mabuhay po kayo magpakailanman! may God forever bless your soul. thank you very much for everything & i will be missing you terribly.

Ty, May 31, 2003

I just HAD to write something to remember John Larkin by. I decided to look up some information on this great man and to my horror I learnt of his passing away. His music was great and inspirational, and one of many memories from childhood are of listening to his music on the radio or watching one of his clips on the TV. He was humble, unique and truthful and made his apparent "disability" into a method in which he could spread his inspiring message to people throughout the world. His message brought peace to many people throughout the world and he will be missed, but not forgotten. His music is with us forever to remind us of his nature and his desire to bring peace and motivation to people throughout the world. His memory lives on with us and I know, one thing for sure, is that he is perhaps one of the only artists I'll truly remember! far into the years ahead.

Alex Freeman, London, England, June 30, 2003

In 1995, I bought my first ever record. It was Skatmans World on cassette and it cost me 2.29 pounds. For me then, that was all my money, but the first time I heard it, I knew I wanted to hear it more. I memorised every "sking-ding-a-dong" and "bar-bor-bay" in the song, and remember it to this day. John is a legend to me, the man that introduced me to music. He had faded from the medias conciousness by the time of his passing, so when I was told a couple of wekks ago, I was shocked. I'd always hoped that one day, I'd see a new single of his on the new release list. Sadly, thats now unlikely. I love John for his music, but from what Ive read here, I would have loved him as a person as well. I now want to find his album to remember hm by. "Listen to me brother, you just keep on walking, coz you and me and sister aint got nothing to hide!"

Gareth Carpenter , SA, AUSTRALIA, August 5, 2003

I have always loved Johns song Scatman and only recently found out about his passing. This was really sad to hear of as always hoped more songs would still be coming from him. You're a legend Scatman and a true inspiration. RIP Scatman John.

James David Reyome, Tennessee, USA, August 23, 2003

I am just stunned to learn Scatman John passed away. I loved his song and got the cassette single as soon as it came out and darned near wore it out. My son was just a baby when "Scatman" was released and it was the first song he ever danced to. It was a great piece of work and it really touched both PJ and I.

Thanks, Scatman.

Fatih Bayrak Istanbul, TURKEY, 29 August 2003

A few days ago I remembered his song "Scatman John" and started to listen it. A few days later I saw a msg on a msg board it was saying "Scatman John is dead" I didn't believe it at first. I made a search on search engines and I found it's true. I am sad as I lost a friend. He was the singer of my "old school days" REST IN PEACE Scatman.. "Nice guys went with nice horses"

MD, BELGIUM, October 15, 2003

I heard Scatman John the first time here in Belgium. I think it was 1994 or 1995, I was 12 years old. Years flew by and now after 8 years I damn still love his music. Scatman was my first idol, I will never forget his appearances and his music. I remember the schooltimes when we had to choose a song, then we had to perform it in front of the whole class. We took Scatman! It was the most popular song here in Europe. I still admire and respect him, his music will last for ever!

Yeah, Scatman John will never die as long people listen to his brilliant music and remember him! I know I will never forget him! You were and still are the best!

Who knows, I relive the past in the future when I'm dead. I hope i'll hear you singing again?!

Scatman John will allways be on our minds! Respect and rest in peace!

Joshua Derke, United States, October 15, 2003

My name is Joshua Derke. I am 15 years old and starting listening to him a few years ago. I didn't know much about him, but his lyrics were amazingly powerful. I love the music and my favorite song to this day is "Everybody Jam!". Even though I don't have a stutter or any kind of speech impediment, he still inspired me. His music empowers me in ways no other music can. When I learned he died, it was like I lost a brother, even though I never met him. I'm sad that he wasn't really popular in America, but am proud of his many achievments in Europe and Asia.

Scatman John-Thankyou for everything. I will always treasure your music and "philosophy".

Roberto Natareno del Valle, Guatemala, Central America, October 15, 2003

I am so sorry to know this about Scatman John. When I saw his video I decided put a ring in my ear. And always I think I want to be like him when I'm older. Bye bye Scatman.

Amrit, age 14 from India, October 31, 2003

Hello, I'm Amrit, a boy facinated by this wonderful world of SCATLAND.I really respect Scatman John as one of the best singers of all times. He did what practiclly no man on this Earth could do. He overcame his handicap in such a way that made him the world's greatest singer. It is a real pity that he died so early. Posterity will not get his like for a long time. What I like(d) in him most was his persona. Unlike most of the other the other artists of his time, his songs have a meaning. it was the saddest momemt of my life when i heard of his death, that was way back on that cold night of JAN when i searching the net. It really took me a lot to recover from that shock but as he had said "keep living in the moment". That really helped me lot. I end my note with sympathy to his family. Rest in peace, Uncle Scatman.

In his memory I dedicate this petty offering at his feet. i hope, by this, people will understand my respect and feelings for him.

Life's a vivid struggle
And death a long holiday
I miss you brother Scatman
Whether be it night or day.
Mate you were an icon, a superstar,
The greatest this world could ever bare
To me and to the millions of fans,
You'll always remain dear.
There's always been something special in your name,
Be it past, present or future,
Scatman's legacy will always remain the same.
Though my verse is weak, and it may sound like rodent's squeak,
But, of one thing I am sure,
That my love for you will always remainpure.
You ARE the best, your voice IS unique
You'll always be loved by all, whether it is an American, an Indian or a Greek.
And now the days have passed
But still, this fourteen year old asks God like a man
"Where's the SCATMAN"

C.J. Neethling, South Africa, November 4, 2003

Going through my music collection the other day, I came across something that formed part of my post high school childhood. The First 'Scatman' Album on tape. I played it on my hi-fi T-Deck. And remembered, yes, the rhythm the beat something new, something I remembered, different than the usual stuff they play on the radio. First thing came to mind was, heck, why havent we heard anything new from him yet. I remembered Scatman's world. A great hit. and lyrics from 'Im the Scatman'. I still love those songs. I wondered what the h__ happened to the old geezer. I got online, and searched for 'Scatman John'. Then... as the results displayed one by one... I saw the words "passed away". I was like what the h__? I could not believe it. Is everyone just dying? Then I noticed that, just because the Scatman is gone, doesn't mean he is dead. His songs will live on to those who remember him. And remeber I still do. May he spend times a jolly good plenty in that big giant gig in the sky.

Rest in peace, Mr John Larkin. You will be missed.

David, Australia, November 17, 2003

Wow I can't believe I haven't found this out earlier. It so sad it took me nearly 4 years to find out that John "Scatman" Larkin has died :( Very upset. Listening all his music now. Rest in peace. Your music will never be forgotten.

Keith H, March 12, 2004

I only found out Scatman John died today. It's weird, a friend of mine and I were remembering buying his singles on the school bus, we were only about seven in those days, but he really was an incredible guy,and we loved his music. It was really bad to find out he died, it was a real shock - I got home and typed 'Scatman John' into the search engine to see what he was up to, and found out that he passed away in 1999.

Scatman's world was an incredible song, one memory it brings is me and my cousin in our living room, playing the tape over and over, trying to jot down the words of his songs (we hadnt even heard of the internet in '95!) but even though we played that tape about ten times in a row we never tired of it. It is one single I refused to get rid of. I read the lyrics now, and they mean a lot more than when I was seven, I never knew about his stammering, all I knew was that he was an incredibly tallented man, and I think I speak for all of us when I say that he and his music will be greatly missed. He always seemed so caring, the lyrics to scatman's world prove this, and I would have loved to have met him- on that subject, reading the people's messages, it is incredible how many people met him in person, this proves he didnt let his hits get to his head and shut his fans out, he was there to talk to anyone. I'll end this by saying that when I die, Scatman John is one man I would really love to meet up there, I have a skin condition that always had people talking about me, but I realised the best thing to do was to take advantage of this, and laugh with them, and through that I have made many friends, by being light hearted about any problem, and it seems that was the Scatman's approach.

Rest in peace Scatman, I will never forget your music, you are an inspiration to the human spirit, and made so many comfortable with their disabilities. Keep scatting up there!

"Cowled_Wolfe", U.S. Age 15. March 5, 2004

The other day, I downloaded a random video of some gameplay tricks from a game ("Halo"). The music was strange, unfamiliar. Though I knew the genre of techno quite well, I was amazed at the voice making noises to it. It held me in a deep state of curiosity, I was even more amazed by the rapping. I normally hold a strong dislike for rap, but this was so smooth, and the lyrics were inspirational to me, though I was lost to their meaning. The melody alone, I suppose, is what made it seem so inspiring.

After a Google search on the lyrics, I found the name of the song to be "Scatman". I searched the song on Kazaa and downloaded it. I then, downloaded a few other songs. The one to have touched me the most is "Scatman's World".

After searching around more, I wanted to learn about the author of this music. Google once again led me to some short autobiographies, but soon enough I realized John the Scatman was no longer with us. I can only say that his legacy now lives on in just one more soul, mine. Having read the page http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/kuster/pioneers/scatman.html, I felt that it would only be appropriate to say that his music touches the inside of my heart in that rare way which I cannot describe.

Up in heaven, he must be proud to see that his music has touched such a vast array of people in the world. Spanning cultures, and ages. Not limited by the imagined boundries of race, his music goes on. A late thankyou, and kudos, John.

P.S. As soon as the money is mine, I'm buying a CD of the Scatman's. I can't steal work of an artist driven to help others, nor that of a man so great.

Agustin Miranda, Quito - Ecuador. May 10, 2004

My name is Agustin Miranda. I am from Quito - Ecuador in South America. I am a very fan of John Larkin "The Scatman." I love all his songs, especialy "I am Scatman ski-ba-bo-ba-dop-bop" and I am so sorry about his death. I am 22 years old and when I hear his songs I remember when I was in my first years in high school. I really love his songs. Thank you and good bye

Michael Colbeck, UK. May 13, 2004

Upon breaking out my vinyl copy of Scatman's World at a university dance we had the other day I realised that the king will never die. Everybody was having a fantastic, euphoric time remembering how that man touched us all with his scat. We Love You Scatman!!! Everyone at the University of Nottingham.

James, age 16, Australia, August 7, 2004

"Yes he truly is a legend. He seems extremely intelligent. I have listened to Scatman on and off for about 2 - 3 years now and It never gets old. That is the best song, until I heard some of his others. These I believe are his top 3 songs:

  1. Let It Go (New to me I Guess)
  2. Scatman (Gotta Love It)
  3. Scatman's World (Very Good Lyrics)

When I found out that Scatman John died I felt so sad for him. The poor guy, he was so great at what he did and seemed like such a nice person. Whenever I hear any of his songs I feel sad now and I really do not know why as I have never met him and have only just discovered his other songs besides Scatman recently.

Arch & Ady Shaw - September 1, 2004

Just a quick note to say how gutted myself and my work colleagues were when we learnt of the sad demise of the one and only Scatman John. He will be sorely missed by us all but especially by LV who worshipped the great man and adored his tunes.

Live the dream John!!

Robert Anderson, Hale Village, Liverpool, UK - .September 1, 2004

To settle a bet, I found this site, only to find out that John was an exceptional man, I couldn't take any money after reading these memories of him. His influence is awesome, using the original meaning of the word. I saw him in concert at I loved him then and I love him now. You do some good resting Mr Larkin, it's a Scatman's world down here.

The scatman, man, rest in peace.

Antonio M Sopena, SPAIN, Seville - December 28, 2004

Scatman a great musician, with his own style. Thank you for your music. In the sky singing your wonderful songs are now with God.

Brennain Garber, California - February 16, 2005

Today I got a great gift in the form of a CD Scatmans World. I was so impressed that I immediatly googled for John's info. I was saddend when I found him no longer with us. The world need more good men like him. Anyway, since people have been writing all the way up to 2004 I thought I would add my own little contribution. I didn't know him but for all the beautiful things that people have said about him. I will buy his other CD's (I never buy cd's) and wish all those who loved him and still love him the best.

BAlvaro Maharg, Madrid, Spain - February 16, 2005

I found out about John Larkin's untimely demise a few years after the fact. He will always be one of my favorites. I think that one of his best qualities that really shone through was his warmth and kindness and genuine love for people. The video for 'Scatman's World" is absolutely wonderful, extraordinary, and beautiful. His endearing qualities even transcend language. Not many people here in Spain knew what he was talking about in his songs, but they loved the infectious rhythm, and Scatman's truly unique persona. I fortunately understood everything that Scatman John was telling us, and it helped me to get through some tough times in my life. It is truly unfair that he had to leave us so soon, having only just tasted success. Fortunately we have his extraordinary recordings and videos to remind us of what a talented, kind individual he was and how he taught so many to overcome their fears and love themselves. Dear Scatman, thank you for coming on to the music scene when you did, and making so many people happy. Gone but not forgotten

Kirill Alferov aka Louigi Verona, Russia - February 20, 2005

I was a big fan of Scatman John's music. When I first saw his Scatman's World video, heard the music, I was like shocked or something. My classmate gave me a tape and it was one of those rare times when you rush home from school to listen to your fav music. My best friend who was also in the same class with me started listening to Scatman too, we were both fans. I listened to Scatman for two or three years in a row, I have two albums. Dunno if it's true he released a third album in 1999, but I heard his new song over the radio which wasn't in the second album. I said that I was a fan of his music, because I absolutely didn't know anything about him. I had no INet at that time. Today I managed to find a couple of interviews with him. Anyway, he was the only musician that I was actually a big fan of. I am not a stutterer, but I loved working with my pronounciation, to achieve the syllable repeat effect. It is real hard, you know, it really improved my pronunciation, before that I was speaking as if I got water in my mouth. When I heard he died, I wasn't listening to his music for a while and the news was so sad, but it just passed by. Today, when I was searching for him in the INet because of no particular reason, I put his records on and became very sad. Scatman is a big period of my life. Now when I know there is no more John Larkin, it is sad. But it is the truth and I don't want to be too sad about his death because he wouldn't want that. As he said "We got to believe in love, That's what there ever will be..." I'd like to say my big thanks to Scatman John. His music, his great albums and his great hat on the microphone really made me happy when I was a school kid. I wish your music won't be forgotten, man! Let it be played on the radio often!

I was a kid back in 95' but the "Scatman" and "Scatman's world" were very popular among my friends and me. I only recently found out about the death of John Larkin and was greatly saddened by the news. From what I've read and heard he was a great man and very humble in his greatness too. I was listening "Scatman" a few minutes ago and it just reminded me of him so I decided to share my thoughts about him. And I will agree with what some have said before me - he truly was an exceptional individual and a champion in the modern society that we should all remember. His example may be a good lesson to all of us how even a single person can make a difference if he/she truly wants to. Wherever you are John Larkin, I hope you know that you've earned my utmost respect. Rest in peace.

Fredrik Hulbekkmo, Norway - March 30, 2005

I'm 15 years old and I first heard Scatman's songs when I was 6. I was so inspired. Many at my school like him, too. When I heard that he was dead I couldn't hold my tears. He was a great man. His music will never die.

Damion Brown, Australia, April 7, 2005

I first heard Scatman when Iwas on a 6th grade (11yo) exchange trip to Germany so I would have been one of the lucky people that got to hear Scatman first in the world. I remember everyone on the exchange was absolutely obsessed with that song and come back to Australia expecting everyone to be the same. It was hilarious us coming back into the school ground going "have you heard that ski-ba-bop-ba-dop-bop song?" I still remember their faces like "what the h___did they do to you in Germany". Anyway I just wanted to say that because of the history of the song and it being the first song I really remember loving so Scatman will be a part of my life forever! I am deeply saddened though to hear that he is no longer with us, he seemed to be outside of music a model human being.

Corey S., Florida, United States - April 14, 2005

I remember about six years ago I first heard the Scatman John's song Scatman in the movie basketball. It instantly caught onto me and inspired me to do further research. Learning of his life of overcoming adversity is an inspiration to all. We Miss you John!

Blair Crewther, Australia - April 22, 2005

I listened to John's music when it first came out and enjoyed it immensly. After hearing a couple of his songs I waited for more to be released, but never heard anymore from this great artist. I recently found out that John had died, after trying to check up on how to spell his name on the internet. You could have knocked me over with a feather. I know I'l miss his music and ideas and will always have one or two of his songs in my favourites list.

Anya (Washington, USA) - April 22, 2005

I was looking for songs and biography of Scatman John on Internet and was sad to find out he is not with us anymore... In Ukraine, where I used to live, he was very popular. One day I mentioned Scatman John to my husband (he's an American) and was surprised to find out that he's never heard his songs! Now I'm planning to but a CD of Scatman John and introduce his songs and his life story to my husband. I'm sure he will like it.

Brian H. - May 1, 2005

I never knew him personally, nor did his existence become known to me until just recently, but he was a profoundly talented man and I was saddened to find out he was dead. Reading this page has made me really realize what a marvelous person he was, and I'm sorry that I never got the chance to meet him in person.

Fuad Mammadov (Baku, Azerbaijan) - May 23, 2005

Dear Scatman! I know you are not around anymore... However I want your soul always to be as happy as you was giving people happiness and smile through your songs. I also know that the number 3 was following after you all your life, same as in mine. You was here because God wanted you to share happiness during that time... God created you to make people more kind and joyful.

Rob (United Kingdom) - May 26, 2005

i am 15 and live in the UK. I first heard his song scatman when I was about 5 or 6 and have aways liked it since. I forgot about the song over the past few years until my 19 yr old sister played the song again! It reminded me of my childhood and it still remains a firm favoriate with me and my sister!! p.s. i did not realise he passed away until coming across this board just now, I hope, even though he's not with us his music gets passed down to future generations for everybody to hear and enjoy!!

Carl E. (Scotland) - June 5, 2005

Coming in from work last night I thought I would try and find out what happened to Scatman John. Opening the pages brought a lump in my throat as I realised John 'Scatman' Larkin had sadly passed away. His songs hold alot of memories for me as it was the songs I listened to growing up. Why I waited this long to find out more about him I don't know but to find out what he done for so many people was truly touching. Even today I put on a Scatman John song and drift back to my much younger days. Going to miss him so very much. Scat forever Sir. R.I.P

Stu F - 6/19/2005

Firstly Judith I should like to introduce myself, and my friends, for it is they that I represent, in many ways I feel we can all relate, but all too often we find that those we once admired, even were aware of, those like Scatman John and his ilk. The tragedy of John, and even the tragedies of my friends is that they can never happen in the harmomy which we, for some, often found in the songs with which we grew, those such as John put. My name is Stu and and my friend both are stutterers, although I cannot confess to any admission concerning my stuttering being nearly as bad as his, my friend Ernst, whose stuttering was a driving force, if not the, behind our University Stuttering club - my friend Sara I also met here who also stutters. We go to clubs and to the shops. But to John, who only now I find out was a stutterer, like myself and Sara and Ernst - who says Hi John! - and Sara also! But his music gave so much pleasure to people no matter what they spoke, and for this he should be loved I feel. I cannot speak as fans on this site, for Scatman John was never big in my life. But I respect what he has achieved with his voice, and pray that many follow in happiness.

T Ali (UK) - 6/19/2005

bit of a shock to discover the great scatman is dead! first heard the song "scatman"- thought it was awful at first- but absolutely loved it later on, then i heard "everybody jam" and it just blew me away a great artist sadly missed, cant believe he is no more- but his great music will surely live on

Bitiusca George - Romania (6/18/2005)

My name is Bitiusca George and I live in Romania(19 yrs old). Back in the mid 90's there was this very large and "mainstreamed" eurodance scene: DJ Bobo, 2Unlimited, La Bouche etc. Everybody was listening to those catchy melodies. I was just a kid back then, and when I first heard Scatman, I was immediatelly blown away by the unusual combination of eurodance, jazz and rap. That was awesome!!! I remember watching MTV European Top 20 and swearing at whoever was above Scatman's World in the chart (2pac included :D). Those were the days...I only saw the video for Scatman's World once in my life, when it was on MTV, in 1995 or 1996, and I wouldn't watch it again, in order not to break the spell and the charm it put on me. "Scatman's World" was the greatest dance album ever, along with DJ Bobo's "There Is A Party"-tie:) I still have my "Scatman's World" cassete, and I still listen to it. It brings back my dearest memories of all. The death of Scatman John took me ! by surprise in 2001, when I found out that he passed away. I worte a page in my journal commemorating him as soon as I got home. And everytime I remember his music in my head, my heart is unable to do anything else but cry and regret the long-gone youth, the glorious feelings I had, and him, Scatman John. It's amazing that so many people who were, like me, just children when he lived, remember him and his music so well and it's even more amazing that they actually still feel the need to stay in contact to whatever thing related to Scatman. He's one of those persons that you never get to know(I didn't-only saw him once on MTV), but you never get to forget either. Farewell, mister Scatman. One guy from Romania still believes in your music. We'll meet when time comes.

Lutz.H. - (6/19/2005)

John, I listen to your songs quite a bit, for no reason other than they are energetic, full of life, and fun. You may not be among us anymore, but you're not forgotten. Godspeed, John.

Florentino del Campo - Spain (6/24/2005)

Neil - Dublin, Ireland (June 12, 2005

Like many others, I just found out that scatman john is no longer with us, and it has been one of those moments when you just stop and reflect. I didn't know much about him or anything, but I loved his well known songs. It really shows that he had a strong influence if people are posting these kind messages almost six years on. I'm listening to 'scatman's world' now and its really really weird to think he is gone, and has been for so long without me ever hearing about it. Nice to reminisce though. John Larkin R.I.P.

Keely Jolliffe (June 26, 2005)

Scatman John, you were and are an inspiration.

I have just found out of your passing through my buying your album Scatman's World again as my brother annoyingly nicked it off me and lost it somewhere as he is just as bigger fan as I am of your music, we always fight over who gets to listen to it when we are not together!!! We regularly blast your music out at our homes and when driving still after all these years. Music that is so inspiring and with such words of wisdom that in any situation the words ring true, your music has helped me get through more than you can imagine. You helped people see the beauty in life through music and always stayed true to yourself and also to help people see that people who stutter can acheive everything people who don't stutter can. Promoting happiness and equality in society.

If only more people would have your heart and wisdom, taking time out to concentrate on the lyrics of your songs. You said it best:

Imagine a land of love

Where people have time to care

Where everybody's equal

And we all tell the truth

If you're wondering where this magical place is
You don't have to look too far
You'll find it between your deepest dreams and warmest wishes

The society of Scatland is composed of
Very loving caring people who have
Never even heard of political corruption
Class distinction, war and all the
Other stuff that goes on in the world of earth people.
Everyone is equal in Scatland.
Everyone is equal. Everyone is equal.

We've got to believe in love - That's all there ever will be
That's all there's ever been - For you and me.

I wonder if you're wondering where Scatland is?
It isn't far away. I'll take you there now.
Just close your eyes, make a wish, give yourself a hug.
You're half-way there, just love yourself - love yourself
And a dream will come true. You'll find yourslf in Scatland
And suddenly discover that the person from Scatland is you

The people of Scatland speak in Scatish
Scatish is a language not quite like a leprechaun
It sounds like a language of the people of earth
Who speak in a tongue of their own.
You're all from Scatland. Hatred and resentment?
Well that's unheard of. It's unheard of.

We've got to believe in love...
We've got to believe in love...

This is a brand new day know what I say,
Love is understanding.
Believe me believe me believe me.

Knowing of your passing has saddened me considerably, my brother Ben and I always hoped you would make a come-back and tell the world what for! Your legend will live on in my heart, house, car (loud-always) and when I close my eyes, I imagine I'm in Scatland. I long for Scatland to become a reality.

Infinity thank yous for the influence you've had on my life. You are an irreplaceable legend, you really are.

Rest in peace

Michael Totten (June 30, 2005)

I was looking through some old demos and stumbled onto a recording of John Larkin I helped produce back in 1984(?). I barely remember his stuttering, as we all were in such awe of his ability and personality as a fusion jazz pianist and scatter. When I heard of his death, I went and found that old demo again and played it. I remember at the time John was trying to help a friend kick his heroin habit by hiring him to play on his demo. A couple of those songs on that demo had some very powerful lyrics (The Misfit). His musicianship was impeccable.

I'm out of the business these days, but I will never forget Mr. Larkin's kind-heartedness and cheerful spirit and how much he loved playing our 9-foot Kawai!! I wasn't surprised browsing the internet discovering how successful he'd become after our little session in Hollywood. John Larkin is THE Scatman John?! I knew he would go far!!! Nice to see you again, John.

Oscar Takahashi - Peru, (July 7, 2005)

I just want to share my good memories about Scatman John Larkin with all of you. I'm 27 and I'm a graphic designer here in Lima Peru (South America), in an advertising agency called Young & Rubicam, so let me tell you that I pass too many hours in front of my computer everyday and the music is the only thing that help me to escape for a while. I have a very big collection of music, all kind of music, but I have some favorites songs that I listen almost everyday, one of them, and very special is "scatman". I put that song into my favorites since the first time i heard it. I'm pretty sure that John was a very kind and good man, just what the song said: well I'm the proffesor... teaching us what life is all about. I really appreciate people like John, I can say that I'm very proud too just like all his fans around the world. Thank you John Larkin. Thank you Scatman.

Andy Bolton - UK, (August 6, 2005)

Okay i'm 17, and yes i was only 11 when John died, I never met him, and only knew him through his music. As a kid i found his widely proclaimed "Scatman" absolutely amazing, and wondered how a man could possibly scat so fast, i saw this website, and it made me realize what a great man he was. A legend, thats what he is best described as. He will allways be remembered, not only in my memory, but many others as well. YOU LEGEND SCATMAN JOHN

George - (July 4, 2005)

My very first memory of John was when he used to come over my house to visit my brother Bobby, his best friend. This was in the mid 50's. They both shared a common bond - each other. You see my brother was over weight and other kids mad fun of him. John had his stutter and yes, the other kids made fun of him too. They needed each other at that time. They'd go into the bedroom and Bobby would sing and John would beat on anything close till he found the right tone to harmonize with my brother's voice. My brother sang ballads and John would pick up the beat till Bobby would have no choice but to keep up. It would end up where John would go so wild like trying to make just a variety of sounds out of everything he touched. You might say by today's terms The Percussionist. Over the years John was like a part of our family, ALWAYS super with my mom and sisters.

Thru the high school years they were very close and loved to get silly and John could get Bobby busting up with anything he did. Bobby always considered John the most talented person he ever knew, and bobby knew a lot of people in the industry. Mid 60" John would come over our house and play our piano and I'd jump in with my acoustic. When John left my wife would say "That piano will never be the same." I lost them both within a year. John just before my brother and we all felt that losing John took a lot out of Bobby. The last time Bobby saw John was just before we lost him. Judy was so kind to let Bobby come over and be with him for a short while.

I'll tell you what kind of guy John was, even though John was ill he made the time to come to my mom's service. We hugged and I said "John how are you doing?" I knew he was not well and he said "today's not about me it's about your mom."

The many early years I knew him as only John, never knew "Scatman' a short story-sure every day we spent together was a story. His picture hangs in our house next to Bobby's.

Now when I think of John I think of Bobby and vise versa, only now I think of Judy too.

Valan - UK, (August 2005)

Ive never forgotten the Scatman who came from nowhere and helped me through some very tough times back in '96. Id often chill after a few to many beers and put on the CD last thing at night, i still do. Through my headphones and in the dark i would always be warmed by the positive lyrics and the energy and soul of the compositions. I never got tired of those tunes and still to this day once i start playing them they end up on repeat.

When i found out just last year about John passing away i felt really sad but i felt that i had been touched in a rare kind of way, he would do the singing, but it was also like he was listening and understanding and trying to help me out with his words. Something that means alot to me and i will never forget.

This might sound strange but im a really die hard Heavy Metal fan, i dont like pop music of any kind at all. I think the Scatmans music and words were able to pass by any genre of music because of the genuine honesty of the lyrics and the intelligent compositions.

Your a legend Scatman! Its amazing to see people posting still, if more people could find this site im sure alot of people would have storys to tell as well!!

Im getting married to a wonderfull girl next month and im gonna make sure Scatman gets played at some point during the night, me and this girl have been together since '96 so you could say its only right that he should make a special musical guest appearance. Thanks! keep the scatland faith people

Alex - Australia, (August 20, 2005)

Upon playing "The Scatman" song, I decided to check Johns current occupations on the internet. I was shocked to hear that he had passed away and for that I am saddened. I enjoyed his input to this world and his contribution to music. Sorry for being a bit behind current events, however, I'm quite sure The Scatman will feature in the future, of that, I am in no doubt.

Sami S. Berjaoui, (Lebanon) September 1, 2005)

I would put John "Scatman" Larkin in the same basket of other great people that personally affected me like John Lennon or Muhammad Ali Clay or Sean Connery. I grew up listening to his "Scatman's World" song, and the message behind it was stuck in mind forever. I still listen to it till now, and it still rocks. I was really saddened when I knew he had passed away. I knew that a great man who saw humanity the way it should be, is now watching us from up above, scatting along other great men. God bless you Scatman

John (September 3, 2005)

I never really heard of John Larkin or any of his music but when I heard his song "Scatman" from the movie "Nothing To Lose" with Tim Robbins and Martin Lawrence I just loved it. I would like to hear whatever he sings and I will definitely look into it. From what I read on the comments of others, he had to be a great man.

Iker Sanchez - Basque Country (Sept 14, 2005)

Jonathan H - Vanuatu (September 5, 2005)

Scatman's song will always stay in our memories. . . Scatman and Scatman's World, 2 of the best 90's songs ever. Rest In Peace. Luv ya.

Salvador Alejandro - Mexico (October 3, 2005)

What can you say about a man so loved that can be different from what some have already written? What can you say to pay homage to such a character with the skill of making people happy with his scatting ability?

Even to this day, Scatman John has accompanied me pretty much everywhere I go. Be it the mall, school or work, he was with me in my trusty CD player or my stereo system... and no matter what, every single time his song loaded up, I couldn't help but smile and remember what he told us all: "If the Scatman can do it, so can you".

To this day, he is a living example of what can be achieved if you really believe... and I thank everything and everyone who made it able for me to have him with me all this time. It's thanks to him that, whenever I seem to have gloom over my soul, I can smile and try to scat along into the Scatman's World.

Thank you, Mr. Larkin, for the lessons you have given me. May you live on forever in our hearts.

David - Sweden (October 1, 2005)

First and foremost I must say I'm thrilled to see people still paying their respects to the great John Larkin through this memorial site. I started listening to the "Scatman" rather late because at first I didn't understand his greatness. But since a year ago, everytime I put on my dance shoes I start humming his tunes. And when I'm on the dancefloor he makes me feel so special, so... original. Nobody puts me in the corner anymore!

Thx John 4 everything and catch you later in Scatland

Scott Olin - (October 1, 2005)

My name is Scott Olin and I'm a friend of John. I am sorry for your loss and happy for your and his gift of time together. Too many years have passed since we shared the same physical space and I thought I had forever to get back in touch. We spent many wonderful times over the years starting with me be assaulted my the power and intensity of his music. After spending hours trying to understand it, I surrendered to it and stopped trying and just sat there listening. This was in the 1970s on Tampa Ave. in Tarzana. John, Sam Provinzano(sp), Duke Mcvinnie and others played hour after hour day after day, before the gigs, before the demo, before it was business. I have a cassette of the first demo and one of one of a later incarnation of the music and memories.

Thank You, Happy Birthday Johnny, Love, Scott

Laurie Blake - England (October 7, 2005)

Hey I'm Lol from out in england and I used to dance along to this guy when I was four or five, I dont remember really but he was an awesome guy with a supreme talent. I never met him and I guess I won't for quite some time. I'd just like to say that Scatman John is cherished where I am. Me and all of my friends listen to his music, and have gone to great lengths to get more of it. When searching I found this website. I was so upset that he was gone I must admit I was incredibly upset.

My spirits were soon lifted slightly when I saw how many people had posted in memory of him. I hope his spirit has also lifted, taking him to where he richly deserves. Whenever I am feeling down or upset I put Scatman on and very soon I feel a lot better. I still spread his music throughout the world in all sorts of ways; MSN, email, word of mouth, I've even made a few CD's for some of my friends. I hope this continues and his music is spread throughout the world and he is remembered always.

Rest in Peace Scatman, We will all always remember you and your wonderful music.

Laurie Blake, yet another huge fan.

Pres - Japan (October 6, 2005)

I bought Scatman John's CD when it first came out here in Japan in... 1995? The music is great, and the lyrics are powerfully positive -- together that makes it one of those CDs that's eminently listenable, even here ten years down the road. "Scatman's World" just came shuffling by in iTunes and on a whim I did a search for his name, and just now found out that he passed away six years ago? I'd say that that's sad, but then again how many people can look back and say they've successfully sent such a positive message out across the entire world? His music still lifts me up whenever I hear it, and I'm grateful that he got his message out in the time that he was given. You did good, John.

Cedric - Monoco (October 21, 2005)

It's so great to see that there are so many people who still love and remember John Scatman... I heard his song "Scatman's World" when I was a kid, and it never since has quitted my memory. I felt in love with that song, and even if I never heard it again for many years, it was still that song that I was humming under the shower... Only few month ago, I managed to hear this wonderful song again, and then I found out that Scatman was also the author of "Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop", another song i have always loved. And now, thanks to this website and all the messages that have been posted, I understand that he was not only a great artist, but also a great person, loved by lots of people all over the world.

Rest In Peace John, you can be proud of what you've done. I hope from where you are now you can feel the love and the gratitude of the many people you delighted and still delight with your wonderful songs and lyrics.

Roberto Mancilla, Monterrey, Mexico (October 6, 2005)

My name is Roberto and I'm from Mexico. I was 10 years old when I first listened to Scatman John. I loved his music, I had his record and played it till I couldn't listen it any more (because it ceased to function). I loved the way he expressed himself in his lyrics. In fact I studied harder in my english classes so I could understand them completely. Today Thursday, October 6 at 12:00 I found out that John had died in 1999. It really broke my heart because when I was small I always wanted to meet him. But thinking about it, his escence, part of his spirit is inside his songs. I will always admire him for how he lived and for how he made me feel with his music. Siempre tendrá un lugar en mi corazón.

Knut, Norway (November 5, 2005)

I didn't learn of his dying in '99 until 30 minutes prior to my writing this. I remember seeing some five seconds of his music video on the tv, when it first came out. I was 7 years old at the time, and not very into music. However, the part where he said "bee bop a bodda bop bop a bodda bop" stayed in the back of my head for ten years, popping up from time to time, curiously cheering me up, until I happened upon a flash tribute to him. I watched it, and started wondering why it said "In memory of a great man", as I was under the impression he was still alive. I did some checking, and found this memorial site in his honour. I read through the comments, and found myself saddened by his death -six years too late- and decided to write a comment of my own, for what it would be worth. I've also found that for the first time a song has gotten stuck to my head, I'm actually happy about it, as the song cheers me up. If remembrance is immortality, then Scatman John Larkin is certain to be immortal, for I for one will absolutely not forget him in my lifetime.

James B (Australia) - November 26, 2005

Hello I am an Australian (17) and remember hearing John on the radio in the mid 90s when I was about 7-8 years old, his voice conjuring up images of a Jamaican. This memory attached itself until '99 when I remember being in the school hall at an aerobics session and hearing 'scatman' being played. In the playground that day many were trying to imitate and thought it was one of the coolest sounds. I asked my dad that day what was a scatman? He said either a person who makes meaningless noises or an expert in animal faeces; I decided it was the former. As time progressed the tune stuck with me but I never once bothered to find out about the 'scatman' until now. I am ashamed that it took until 2005 to realize the story behind the music that this beautiful noise was not in fact 'meaningless' but abound in a reason that cannot manifest itself in words. Today I discovered that John was not just a selfless musician that he cared about the kids growing up stuttering, I remember the 'stutterers' at our school being bullied and the pain he alleviated by making these noises 'cool' was immeasurable: this elimination of stigma around stuttering is inspiring. I can only hope that others bother to inquire into the 'scatman'. His scats will resonate for centuries to come, his infectious rhythms will continue to inspire, the meaning generated in his work, in one word, transcendent. Love you all.-James

..Wow... I found out like, 4 days ago that Scatman died on 1999... and it hit me big time. Since I was young I always liked the Scatman song, and it makes me remember times of happiness, and even though at first I thought it was just a "creative" way of making music, I didn't know he stuttered, until later. This site shows just how much Mr. Larkin reached people's hearts.. Early when I was reading the messages that people posted, my eyes kept getting watery... until I finally couldn't help it and started crying.. Isn't it amazing how people share a common bond now?

Rest in Peace, Scatman.. and even though I am not a Christian, and I don't believe in God, I bet you're blasting Heaven's speakers now! Because you're the man! *round of applause for Scatman*

Daniel C (India) - December 10, 2005

I can't believe this genius of a previous generation is gone... what a loss!!!

I'm from India...and I first listened to Scatman John in 1995 - the time when 'Informer' - .Real McCoy - Haddaway - Culture Beat - .Rednex etc - interested us kids.... well conventional 'Dance' music.....this guy was awesome & DIFFERENT...

Now, almost 10 years later I just chanced upon this set of mp3s which I borrowed from a friend....it had the Scatman John song 'Scatman' and it brought a rush of memories in high school.... those blue and white uniforms...the friends....almost everything....a common thread...'Scatman John'...and a big SMILE... I remember one thing though..is that he dedicated the album 'Scatman's World' to his wife... hmmm

I think the tracks Scatman & Scatman's World were heard over and over... but the songs I really loved were,. Only You, Mambo Jambo, Everybody Jam, and most of all, POPSTAR....GREAT LYRICS!

Check this out:

Someone's got to be the hero, someone got to do the job
Someone's got to do the business, Someone's got to be the fool
Someone's got to be the clown, that's creating the sound that makes the world go round...Talk about a reality check... YEAH!!!

I wish some of these kiddy "popstars" spend time listening to stuff...music in our times...with a voice of a previous generation....SUCH GREAT TALENT...

And even though I'm grown up (26 years) today...I've spent almost seven hours listening to Scatman World's track listening. ....well... you guessed....

I've heard of this rock musician called the 'The Great Kat', well... Mr John Larkin, for me you'll always be the one and only 'The Great SKat'...

Thanks for the great music...

This year (2005) i found that old tape in my collection and listened it for 4 hour's.The tape was used off, quality was terrible, so i had to find digital audio. Anthony Barnardo (stationed in Lemoore, CA. originally from Dudley, MA.) - Jan.16, 2006

I just found out today that Scatman John had passed, 7 years after he actually passed. I first heard his music when I was 8 years old. My father bought me "Scatman John's" single because I had seen the video on MTV. I listened to it a little and it then found a place in the back of my cd collection as the years went on. When I was a senior in high school and was just driving around with my friends, one of my friends took out the Scatman cd and put it. A smile came to my face when I heard it again because I've always loved the music, although my friends chuckled alittle bit. It eventually turned into a song that represented the good times that our little circle of friends had before I left for the military. Wheneve I go home on leave, my friend Josh always mentions the Scatman cd. I thank John "Scatman" Larkin for his music that keeps my friends and I close. My prayers go to his family. R.I.P Mr. Larkin.

Saludos a todos:

Hola.

(In English - sent by Cristian, probably using an online translation service). Greetings to all: Hello. I am Cristian, and I write to them from Chile. A time ago I eeted again myself with Scatman, and for me has been an exceptional experience. Memory that near year 95 or 96, both subjects of Scatman arrived at my country, "Scatman" and "Scatmanworld". It was months ago that I remembered it, because I was a boy at that time and only had few memories. But by chance I was a page where hit "Scatman" was his, and is fascinated. It is really a great song. Soon it looks for in the network other subjects and appeared the "Scatman world", later I looked for information of John Larkin, biography and what could. I even found valuable information and an interview that did to him, from which the man has fallen to me so well. Unfortunately all the material that I have I have lowered it by the computer, because alive in one of the isolated cities of Chile, and here to discs, neither original nor copies can be obtained. I have only four songs: "Scatman", "ScatmanWorld" "Mambo Thief" and "Welcome To Scatland" (who is presentation). So it would thank for much if some of you could send me to my mail which has of Scatman, mp3, photos, videos, etc. Ah! and if somebody wants the subjects that I have, only has pedírmelos to my mail and with taste the shipment, also I have the video-paper clip of "Scatman" in MPG, thus equal I can share it with some if it wants. I was surprised much when I saw for the first time, very was moved, and in the beginning, like first impression, she disappointed a little to me, but soon I included/understood the idea of John, and its objective to make an equal and better world for all. If somebody has the video-paper clip of "ScatmanWorld" it would thank for much to him that said to me, or that finally me it counted it. Greetings to all, and in special one very great to Scatman John, who will be whenever we listen to it and we comment of him and his great music. cristian.orozco@gmail.com

This is very late, but I wish you all the best. John will be sorely missed. A great talent gone up there to the sky!!!!

Gareth Bramley - Sheffield, England, 2/16/2006

I remember Scatman John's dolcet tones vividly. I cannot think of many greater influences on my formative years. The way that Scatman John's lyrics acted as a message of how to manage in times of adversity particularly attracted me to Scatman as an artist and made me a fan of Scat in general.

I was deeply saddened to hear of his death. I only hope that his messages live on for many years to come. I, for one, would like to hear Scatman's music re-released in today's charts. I am sure that a number 1 single would be guaranteed.

I was never lucky enough to meet the man in person, but I think he is an icon to all those people with a stutter. I was actually lucky enough to meet Gareth Gates, the english pop idol runner up, after his concert once, and he specifically mentioned that the Scatman had helped him cope with his condition immesurably.

Doug L. - New Jersey, USA, 2/21/2006

I am 17 years old. I have only recently been introduced to Scatman John's music. The first time I heard his song "Scatman", then "Night Train", "Everybody Jam", then "Scatman's World" and I got addicted. I wanted to know more about this man, so I searched VERY extensively through the internet. To my surprise there is very little information about him. But I have managed to find biographies, interviews, and so on to learn about him. I love everything about this man. Scatman John has changed the way I look at life, he's changed the way I look at people, and changed the way I act. Unfortunantly I've never heard about him until after his death. You don't understand how sad this makes me, that I will never be able to meet the one and only role model I've ever had. This man is my hero. I would do ANYTHING to meet with him or sit down and have a chat with him, and I find it so interesting to read posts and comments about this man. I've searched long and hard to find his CD's and bought every one of them. I love every song he's ever made, and listen to them every morning of my life on the drive to school. Every lyric he has ever written was written with heart. Scatman John has also helped me gain a growing love for jazz.

I sincerely offer my condolences to his family members, and only hope they get to read this comment, so they know people out there are still inspired and moved by him. John Larkin was one of a kind, there will never be another that will even come NEAR him in greatness. He is living on in my heart, and I hope one day to meet the man up in heaven.

Hello and good-bye, friend I never had. I just learned about John Larkin today. It was a coincidence that I bought a CD with his song "Scatman" on it. When I heard it, I suddenly felt so very happy. I didn't even realize, why. It took me a while to realize that that guy wasn't just rapping gibberish; his words, his scatting, contained such emotion, such positivity, happiness, it's undescribable. I felt so fascinated that I just had to find out more about this man.... The lyrics of his songs showed me what a wonderful man he had been, and the knowledge that he has died struck me deeply for someone I have never seen before.... When I came across this site, finally, and read what he meant to other people, tears came to my eyes.John, you are the proof that angels do exist on earth and that they can make an impact.. I thank you for opening my eyes. And I will try to keep up your legacy. Have fun in heaven, friend. And scat in peace.

'A Hero' - I'm a 17 year old female, and am involved in music performance and music journalism. Firstly I'd like to say I'm very sorry for the loss of John Larkin, and it was only recently, when I revisited the music I listened to when I was little, that I found out.

Growing up in the early 90s meant for me a diet of early britpop and iconic pop boybands/girlbands. Despite this, the music that brings to back mind hot summers, with all the windows down in the car, and the congregation of all the kids on my street in my porch, drinking lemonade and trading spice girls post-cards, is Scatman's music.

I took music lessons from the age of 5, and my violin teacher frequently encouraged me to sing. My problem was that I was always too shy to sing. Despite this, Scatman was an exception; I was in awe of the rhythms and sca singing of Scatman, sort of tranzed, and would always encourage others to sing along too, and this was despite of the fact I had no idea of who this musician was.

So, I'm very sorry about the death of Scatman, but I am touched and excited at the fact that such a guy was subconsciously my first real inspiration.

I've had the very best life. I have tasted beauty"

"I hope that the kids, while they sing along to my songs or dance to it, feel that life is not that bad at all. Even for just a minute". E' vero, e mi succede ogni volta che la canto It's a scoobie oobie doobie scoobie doobie melody

Grazie, John.

My name is Donavan Purdum and I live in Ft.Rucker Alabama. Just recently I started listening to Johns work and all i can say is , amazing. Finnaly someone who does there own thing and says what they believe in and practices it. His style was independent and one-and-only. He's influencial and has a charismatic feel to his music. I wish he could still be here and I wish I could have met him.

For Judy Larkin - We've never met, but the last time we spoke with John, he told us about you. My husband Gary and I met John in 1973 in Highland Park. We were living in a duplex on Avenue 49. One day we heard some wild piano music coming from our neighbor's and went to investigate--of course it was John. He was a great musician. For the next few years John would call us to be in his audience at whatever club, bar, or dive that he happened to be playing in and we would always be there. My favorite venue was a winery where he played while we got drunk on the house wine, sitting in the sun on the patio. In 1979 we moved to Orange County (John was one of our movers) and didn't see as much of John anymore. We spoke sometimes on the phone and checked in with his mom, but after a while he was overseas and we finally lost track of each other. Before that my husband who is a sculptor managed to get John to sit still long enough to sculpt his portrait (a younger John with long hair.) There were two copies of the portrait; I hope his copy survived for you. We didn't know John the famous, successful recording artist, but in our hearts he was famous and successful even in the 70's. It's wonderful but not surprising that people still access this site so long after his death; he just had that kind of a lasting effect on people.

Useful eurodance it was, i liked it a lot!

Part of my youth, songs I'll always remember, very catchy,

And with a message not to forget, not only for stutterers,

But for everybody..

I would have liked to see him live one day,
But well.. never had the chance, I was waaay too young that time

I guess the thing I want to say is that you have to deal in an optimistic way with your "problems"
But always stay down to earth, which I believe he was too..

Ciao, take care everybody!

Wow. That's a real shame. I just heard of John a few months ago, and thought his music was new. I had never heard of Scatman John, and I was around at that era. Sad to hear he's dead. Wish I could have heard his insightful words back when they were new :( Oh well. No time like the present. Inspiring words are for the heat of the moment, I guess :)

I am here to say that I will always continue to love Scatman, always will I listen to his music. I just heard about him two days ago and when I first heard the first 5 seconds of the song, I loved it. I knew that this guy had some real talent, when I looked up his name in google I found this website. Now that I know a lot about Scatman, I really wish he was still alive, to make more of his music which was THE BEST!!. Also this will show that people that stutter a lot can maybe become a famous person like Scatman because of how they speak. If only Scatman will continue to live....for he will forever in my heart

Glen Bosiwang, (Sabah, Malaysia) - added June 7, 2006

Seven years have passed since Scatman John left Earth for eternity.

And though it seems like a long walk, right after I graduate from a particular university and decide to go on living with my newfound talent and creativity, I still never let his famous scat-singing rhythm off my mind, for most of his songs are the most prized assets within my nostalgic collections of DVD movies, songs and comic books. They are also the inspirations of who I really am, my capabilities and my believe in whatever crucial situation and destiny I am about to venture: into the Unknown where the Scatman had been in his lifetime.

When I first heard of his earlier songs, I was instantly mesmerized with its unusual amalgamation of techno music, scatting and jazz (quite a revolution in my taste). Ever since his debut, I constantly listen to it every time I listen to the radio and ignore the rest of the usual contemporary ones. At that time, Scatman's World and Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop are two of my all-time favs, which finally lightened up my life and propelled me to a higher level of imagination.

With my enthusiastic determination to get to know him better through his music, I'd bought the first cassette, the best-selling Scatman's World, which really includes the story of his own imaginary homeworld, Scatland. Then, the next year, I bought Everybody Jam!, which I personally think is richer, more colorful and hip-hopping than the previous one as we continue to dwell into the bizarre universe of Scatman he helped to create. I never think of any songs that are far more satisfying than Scatman's.

Long after that, I heard little or no news of Scatman's latest conquest in the music biz.

Two years. Three years. Then the inevitable happened. In 1999, Scatman John succumbed to lung cancer. The whole world mourned for the stutterer who would capture our hearts with his ability that served as both as boon and bane to his existence.

I sat down, mourning within my heart. I knew it would never be the same again.

Seven years thereafter, after all the struggle I had endured and survived, I once again sit on the bed, looking at two of the greatest gifts Scatman John has ever provided (both now out of print). I pop up the cases and put the cassettes into the player. Even if I lost some parts of my childhood, some are able to come back through the cherished memories of a man who speaks of friendship, love and peace in a language of his own. If you are bored with the conventional messages of sex, violence and other satanic nonsense, the Scatman will always be your man. And that's why he remains one of my all-time favorite singers.

All I can conclude is this: whenever the moon appears at night, always tune in to John's music and you can still imagining that he's singing throughout the streets when everything else takes a deep slumber. He'll always be with us, inside our hearts and minds, if you still believe in him. Someday, I may be able to repay his generous offerings, for as a filmmaker, I may be inserting him or his songs in some of my movies, for Scatman John remains an eternal icon.

Hi, i am all the way from sweden. My first meeting with scatman was on a disco in the summer of 94, i was just about 11 years old, and i heard this son "Scatman" and i felt such an compasion. Everyone danced to his music, even those who didnt usualy dance. I have never felt bad when listening to his music, and altho i have just seen him once on a picture and just heard 1 or 2 of his tracks in my youth, his music tracks and the picture still remains in my head, and the memories i have of this old man who had a wish to make his own music and publish i know everyone remebers. I do, my classmates do, and all children dancing and ejoying his music do....

His music and especially the first track "Scatman" is not only funny with a bit of irony that even a kid understands, but also very good from a musical and thone perspective. It gives joy, and altho you only was about 11 years only dancing to music, his text subconsiounessly reached you to understand his message...

I'm glad he fulfilled his will to make this songs for all of us to take part of...

Olav (Norway) - added June 27, 2006

Dear Scatman, I remember when I attended primary-school, your songs ruled. They where unique, different and had a sense of irony. I remember we used to dance to them, we had them on our walkmans and everywhere, people listened to Scatman.

Some years passed, I never thought about scatman again. Then, one day, I heard about the terrible passing of Scatman John.. I remember the day, I was sitting in the car and I felt sad. They told about the life of Scatman, how he turned his problem with stuttering, to his solution.

I just googled for Scatman, after I got the Scatman song on random (Winamp). As long as we have computers, mp3 and google, Scatman will carry on!

I was reading your site. It's nice to see so much dedication to a great artist. What I find remarkable is the ability for him to take something that bothers him and to impliment it into his music. making one of the best songs and original may I add. Just something you might like to know. I along with millions of others play a game called World of Warcraft. Scatman was used in a very popular video of the game. R.I.P John. Thanks.

first time i heard john larkin was when i was 11, when scatman first played on the radio, and i was hooked. soon i forgot about him. then, a few days ago, i was on wikipedia searching about different genres of music and i come accross something called 'scat-singing' which jogged my memory of john.

soon i was searching for the scatman, and found a few videos on youtube.com..... now he is all i listen to. His cover of Queen's 'the invisible man' is amazing.

R.I.P John Larkin. May you be at the gate of heaven when i come there.

I would like to thank you for giving the people a unique chance to express their gratitude to Scatman John Larkin. It is a great thing not to forget about such great men. I received an audio tape from a friend a long time ago, a tape with Scatman John. I can say that that was the only music that I was listening to. I am sorry I never had the chance to meet him in person to thank him for this great gift he gave to us : real music. Unfortunately, life was cruel with Scatman John, but he will allways be alive in our hearts and he will live through his music.

I was just getting into techno music about 3 days ago. I decided to look on iTunes. I found out about him because his song "Scatman" was on the top ten list under the "Electronic" genre! I watched the Music video, and thought to myself, "Wow. This is truely amazing." I saw that the guy singing looked like a real scat singer. I looked it up on the internet, and I learn that he is dead...I am deeply sadened. It seemed like a rush. His music was too good to be real. And his work is incredible. I am reading all these wonderful experiences people have had with him. He seems like someone I wish I could aspire to be like. I really wish I could meet him...I have never heard such a joyful, happy and uplifting song like "Scatman's World" in my life. I was in shock while I watched the Video. I am going to tell my friends about Scatman John. The world should know this man and his music. I find it to be incredible what he has done, what he has had to struggle with in life, and his love for all good things. Rest in Peace Scatman. You will always be remembered through your wonderful music

I can remember the first time I saw Scatman John perform, I was twelve years old when I saw him on Top of the Pops on UK TV. Life had always been tough for me up to that point, but the Scatman made me realise that my stammer doesn't matter, it's what's inside that counts!

As the great man himself says in Scatman's World - "Scatman, Fatman, Black and White and Brown man, tell me ''bout the colour of your soul."

From the moment I heard these words, things started to change. Where once I could not see anything but darkness and despair, light suddenly burst through to give me strength.

R.I.P Scatman. You gave so many people like myself the courage to achieve, because of you I am now training to be a speech therapist.

Like many, I have only just found out that the 'Scatman' has sadly died. My first memories of him was at high school in 1995, with his I'm a Scatman song. Having a stammer myself, I was often called the Scatman from other pupils at school, but i never knew why untill last month when I accidently came across information about him and his songs on wikipedia. Today I thought I would do a search on google to see if he still sings, or if he is retired etc, when i came across this site to find he has sadly passed away. I listened to his songs quite a lot back in 1995, not understanding the true meanings behind his lyrics untill now. Since reading about him, and downloading his songs and placing them on my ipod, I can only now see what a influence this man must of had on many people's lives. The truth is, whilst people like me are still learning about (and from) the Scatman, and his attitude towards life, he in essence still lives on! His messages are still being recieved.

R.I.P John Larkin, and thank you.

hi judith and all scatman john fans. like so many people, i only just learned of john's death 7 years late. at the time i didnt understand the true meanings of his lyrics and only recently have understood the good he did for so many people. even so long after his death, and for stutterers and non-stutterers alike, scatmans uplifting message can be a shining light for us all in the uncertain world we live in. it is so nice to see so many touching comments on here but most of all, i am writing to say what a decent and kind person john seemed from what i have read. it is so sad he is not here but he has a legacy that will last forever and it must be so good for his wife to know the happiness he brought to so many! GOD BLESS SCATMAN!! HOPE TO SEE U IN SCATLAND SOMEDAY!!

He personified human willingness to succeed and becoming a world-wide hit music sensation at 52 beats even Michael Jackson. I will make a point to remember him by playing the great "Scatman" song once in a while. Thanks John. It seems The angels needed entertainment too .

I just want to say I'm glad to see someone put up this page (sorry for my poor English), because I'm very admirative about John Larkin aka Scatman John, which work and life make me admirative, while his hit-tracks seemed more funny than really 'good' to me. I JUST found out, a minute ago, that Scatman John passed away. I really really really, enjoyed the song "Scatman", I remember I was about 6 when I first saw the video at my grandmother's house, and my brother at the time was pointing out all these cool songs that would come out, and I felt like, " Man, I want to point out a cool song too!!" Well, the video for "Scatman" came on, and was like, "Look, look, check this song out, its really cool!!" I really did like it and I was proud that I finally pointed out an awesome song. Then I went out and had my mom buy me the single on tape, not too long after I got it, someone lost it and I was so upset, I was mad. For awhile, I hadn't heard it then I started downloading songs from my friends computer (Not Free) about 3 years ago, now I listen to it all the time again. Sorry for the long story, but this was my connection to Scatman John. I'm dissapointed to hear about his passing, but we all know he's Scatten' away in heaven. God bless his family. Thank You!

Usually i'm listening to rock/metal/punk music, but my friend persuaded me to hear John's music. He said....look dude,...it's not that stupid, empty disco music you hate. it's really outstanding.... its got something to say....just what you like. And he was right. His scatting is really cool, very individual and the melodies of his songs are outstanding. Never the same mood and tune. Every single track is a smaller surprise. But it's not the only reason, i like him very very much. I totally accept his mentality. If you know the Song of Scatland or Scatman's World you know what am i writing about. No racism, accept each other, not that @*# competition we have to live in, not that @*# money centralized world...my favourite sentence: "How can someone win if that means someone loses" We lost a great artist, but the bigger tragedy is that a great, good, and really nice man too. @*#. So sad:( I will respect he and his memory as long as i live. Finally a happy memory:The girl i like, found Su su su Super Kirei very cute:) When i'm disappointed, or depressed this song makes my smile.

I'd like to share something I kept for myself for many years (I only read it to the Youth Meeting delegates). I corresponded with John Larkin for several years and I asked him once to write something to the young people at the Youth Meetings. He wrote the following.

Hello my friends,

My name is Scatman John. I am a person who stutters and I want to welcome you to the European Youth Meeting.

I think that you should all take a quiet moment and give yourselves congratulations just for having the courage to be here. If congratulating yourself makes you feel uncomfortable, it is totally understandable, because we all have suffered greatly because of our stuttering. Perhaps now is the time to realize how important it is that we learn to esteem ourselves by giving ourselves credit when credit is due. You all do have great courage. Just by being here, you have taken another major step towards honoring yourselves by confronting your stuttering.

For most of you the greatest problem in your life has been stuttering and it's consequences. For many of us, it has literally been a nightmare. There isn't one stutterer I know who hasn't spent most of their lives wishing they could be fluent. Our problem has made us angry. It has made us cry. It has made us afraid of life. It has made us afraid of people. It has made us afraid of situations that normal speakers would never think of being afraid of. Stuttering has seemed like a curse. We have all hurt as a result of it and most of us would certainly never dream that there could ever be anything good or positive about it. I want you all to know that I have experienced all the shame and low self worth that you all have experienced.

Now I am going to tell you all something positive. I began to sing and play piano at age 14, because I had to find an escape from stuttering. I didn't realize that it was the stuttering itself that had propelled me into music. I didn't realize till I was 45 years old that it was stuttering that had driven me to become the musician that I am today. The truth is, "I am a successful artist today because of my stuttering. I am Scatman John because I stutter."

This is my message to all of you: we are not alone. Creation gave problems to every single human being on earth. Creation gave us all those problems for a purpose. Problems are a source of fuel and strength that can propel us to become full and vibrant human beings who can have wonderful lives. We can stop living with the idea that we are "victims or our stuttering" and we can become even greater human being BECAUSE we stutter. I am a more complete person today because of my stuttering.

It wasn't until I was 45 years old I even began to start looking at my stuttering from another perspective. I began to sing and play piano, because I stuttered. Has anyone of you ever thought that the time might come when your greatest problem could turn out to be your greatest asset? There have been many great people who, because of their problems, have had richer lives than they might have had without those problems. As you may know there have been many famous people who stuttered who have gone on to have wonderful lives.

Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the meeting. My touring schedule simply will not allow me to be with you today. But I hope that my words to you can inspire you in some way. Because everything I have told you is the truth, and I want to tell you all from my heart: "If the Scatman can do it........SO CAN YOU!!!"

Love to you all. Have a wonderful meeting and don't be afraid to hug each other. "A hug can be worth more than a thousand words."

Scatman John

I reciently came across Scatman John's other songs aside from "Scatman". And I am listening to "Scatman's World" right now. I love it, I will be listening to this for a while.

The reason I am writing is to say how I feel after reading that he has passed away.

I heard some of his music earlier today and sent the link to the video on youtube to a friend. Then thought I would research about Scatman John and read that he had an issue with stuttering that he turned to an entertaining way to make music. I like this quote "greatest problem has become my greatest asset." And I must say I thought it was moving. Then as I read a little further I read that he passed away and I honestly was sad. I never met him but I would like to think that he is still touching people with his music even 8 years after his passing. And I hope more people will read his story and realize that he has helped many people. I thank him for the great music and I think many other people thank him for his help that he has provided. I hope his family and friends are doing well.

I am a South African now living in the UK and I have stuttered since age 5. I was in junior school when I first heard Scatman John Larkin and for a little while everyone I knew was listening to his songs. When I found out he was a stutterer, that really made me like him more. I had always been afraid of crowds of people and was deathly afraid of public attention, but here all of a sudden was this post middle aged man that had made a hit single and he STUTTERED too!! It taught me that the problem I shared with Mr Larkin was NOT a problem at all. ha ha I started making fun of myself and the nasty kids stopped bugging me. I grew self confidence and now I cant stop talking in a group of people.. when I stammer, I stop and say," sorry, I switched over to "morse code" for a second there.." it never fails to make everyone laugh. Also I am the only one of my friends that stutter..and I am one of the cool guys. hee hee. God bless John Larkin the original Scatman. There are many more now. like me.. I'm (also) a Scatman!

Daniel B. (added July 16, 2007)

Scatman really meant what he was doing, and he wasn't only in it for the stutterers. I'm 14, but I remember 8 years ago, when I first heard "Skip Ba Bop." I thought it was incredibly cool, and even funny. I was going through my older brother's archive of music, and I found that song just laying around, and I decided to do a little research on the Scatman. I originally thought that he had only done the one song, but I figured out that he had written a bunch of other stuff! So I just want to say that I love the Scatman, and I didn't even know he died until today. Thanks for putting up your site, it's a great thing of you.

The first song that ever really grabbed my attention was Scatman. I was probably 8-10 years old and I was visiting a relative with my mum and she played the song then for us. That was the day, the moment my musical life begin. And I'm proud to say that now many years later I still find joy listening to John's music. Some people grow out of the music they listened to when they were kids, but I'm a music fan and ever since my ears were opened by that song I haven't changed. My taste has widened a lot but it all comes down to this: I've never liked music for any other reason than the music itself and how it makes me feel.

Scatman's music stands out from the normal pop that's out there, it's actually got great melodies and lyrics. To some they might be overly positive and cheesy but I feel that those people have lost too much of their inner child :) I'm actually always very positively surprised how good it still sounds. Not just because it takes me back to my childhood but because of how I connect with the moods and themes, musical and lyrical.

I had no idea that the man behind this great music had this stuttering problem until a few years ago when I rediscovered Scatman's World and Everybody Jam and went online and searched for stuff about him. Needless to say I was shocked when I found out what had happened... I felt saddened that this genuinely good man had left this world. He moved people through his message and music. He still does. In a way he never left. Not in my book. His passion will always be a part of me. Thank you John.

I've never met John but whenever I relive the great memories of my childhood, almost the entire flashbacks soundtrack would be themed around John Larkins music. Each and every single time I hear his voice I cannot help but smile, sit back and just think about how life should just be fun.

Living my current life now as an music producer and dj has allowed me to be able to appreciate just how great a individual John was. I made a point of researching all of the artists that have ever inspired me during my complete lifespan on this earth. After gathering information on dozens of artists one person stood out above the rest, that person was John. Where other artists had been praised on all levels for only there artistic creativity it was only John Larkin that was praised as both an artist and a human being.

I know this is late in coming but I feel I couldn't leave this page without leaving a tribute to one of the most incredible individuals to ever grace this planet. (sent 3/28/2006)

I am a great fan of Scatman Johns music. I love the song Scatmans World. Having forgotten about the song for ages, it just came back into life when a friend talked about it yesterday. So I decided to read up about his music, and discovered, shockingly and sadly, that Scatman John is no more.

His music was true innovation and I have never heard anything like it to date. As a 52 year old, he crossed age & cultural boundaries and won the hearts of a much discerning musical audience in their teens. I thought he was a pure jazz musician and I never knew that he actually used to stutter. It is heartening to read about the inspiration that he has been to the stuttering community. He will indeed be missed. I hope that someone, someday, will be able to match up to what he did.

I had never heard of Scatman until my 10-year-old son was watching a video about a video game and it had one of Scatman's songs on it. He proceeded to research everything he could find on this man and found out that Scatman stuttered, just as my son does. I wish he was still alive so I could tell him thank you from the bottom of my heart for showing my son that stuttering is not as negative as he thinks it is. His music has made a huge impact on my son and Scatman John is now one of his favorite people.

I remember how it was to feel fifth-teen and hear John Larkin on the radio. Albeit taboo, what with grunge still in force, John was a very welcome addition to radio, music, and most importantly...art. Having grown through the years and moved so far from the beginning, just to find myself exactly where I left off 14 years ago. I can't help but wish that john scatman was still available to us today. A truly individual power, both to music and the community, with which he shared and overcome what some would consider a disabling trait. John showed himself to be much greater to all of our well being than we could ever imagine. And for that... I am truly inspired. Let us all watch a video, listen to a tune, and close our eyes and smile.....for the feeling that John thrived to convey to us all lay not forgotten but, as a cornerstone for all, remembered for how truly inspiring it was.

I am a Communication Sciences and Disorders student at the University of Minnesota, Duluth and we watched the film "Danny and the Scatman" yesterday in class. I was so moved by John's story of achievement that I began to do some research about his life and found this website. I am very sorry to hear he left this world at such a young age. I think the reason I've felt so compelled to write to you is because John's life is such an inspiration to me. My goal for the remainder my education and for my future career as a Speech-Language Pathologist is to empower people. I've found stuttering to be the most heartbreaking communication disorder I've learned about thus far in my education. I can't stop thinking about the article that John memorized for his sixth grade class and about how he still remembered every word all those years later. Like so many other people who live with stuttering, he knew EXACTLY what he wanted to say, but just couldn't get the words out as efficiently as others. I loved hearing his story of perseverance and triumph over obstacles to his success. He truly was a gifted musician and a pioneer to anyone facing adversity.I will always remember him as I serve people with barriers to fluent speech. I am committed to learning as much as possible about stuttering and how to help people build within themselves the courage and confidence that John exuded in his later life. I know the path that led him to that point was not easy, but he got there, and that is what I will remember and honor.

I've been scooting around YouTube tonight listening to Scatman John's stuff. His music is just so positive and uplifting, it's hard to have a bad mood when those songs come around on the playlist. It's an honest shame that he's passed on, but as long as his music remains in print (nudge nudge, record labels), his spirit will live on. As long as there's a young kid dancing and singing at the top of his/her lungs to Scatman John, all is right in the world. And in an alley somewhere in downtown Scatland, a familiar figure in a hat and moustache ambles along, scatting out a familiar tune. We miss you, John.

I had never heard his music before I had picked up an RCA Disc called "Club Cutz" and the song called Scatman, by none other than John "Scatman" Larkin. I sat there and listened to his song and thought to myself that man that man can "SCAT!" Furthermore, it NEVER dawned on me that he studdered, at all! As I was sitting here remembering that first day I saw the video on MTV. I was thinking, today, as I was transferring some of my CDs to MP3s...his song came up and as I re-listened to it for the ump-teenth I stumbled upon this and other songs Scatman John did and was amazed what a brilliant artist, man, and songwriter he was. He brought an inspiration to the World that makes sense and really opens the mind about ALL problems in the world...I hope that his music keeps bringing inspiration to people for generations to come... Rest in Peace...John "Scatman" Larkin... You will be missed....by all....

When I first heard "Scatman," I was only 14 yrs. old, and at the time I didn't really think much of it....but now I find myself listening to that song almost daily on my way to and from school/work. I've been watching the video to "Scatman's World" on YouTube for the last several days, and the lyrics contain some very profound stuff. In fact, I've been brought to tears everytime I watch/listen to it. John "Scatman" Larkin was a beautiful human being, and the world sorely needs more just like him. And the wikipedia entry brings me to tears the most every time I read it....especially the part that says "In a 1996 interview, he commented that 'I hope that the kids, while they sing along to my songs or dance to it, feel that life is not that bad at all. Even for just a minute.'"

I always kinda considered that scat song kinda annoying. But after reading his wiki....I have so much respect for that man. Not only as a fellow (former) musician, but as a person. To not only overcome ones problems but to turn them into something that people around the WORLD can relate to and enjoy, that is a special ability. I am sorry that he died. . . ..

He is the greatest Musician to ever live! His greatest song was Scatman. I wish he did not die of lung cancer because he was awesome!

i found it on limewire and listened to it tons of times. i then later got a Facebook and got the My Music App. i listened to more songs including Scatman's World and (one of my favorites) The Invisible Man. i wish he was alive right now. Hey, Scatman, if you can hear me, See ya up in heaven!

Devon K. (from Canada, added April 26, 2008)

I may not have known Scatman (I was 1 when he died.), but, as i turned 9, i found out about him. i heard one of his songs (gee, i wonder. maybe Scatman's famous song with the immortal words of Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop.) in a youtube video. Im sure he was a great man and warmed the hearts of many people and SCATMAN will always have a place in my heart. His music inspired many people too! I admit it that im a stutterer too and when i heard his songs it sent a message to me that no matter what others think of my stuttering problem I should live life the way I was intended to. And nothing can ever change the way I feel about him.

John Larkin has helped me through the hardest time in my life. Not personally of course, however, his music was not only inspirational, but it was life saving. This year I discovered a terrible thing in my family, which ripped me apart. In a state of immeasurable sadness and depression, I was mentally instable. After attempting to repair this problem in my family, and recover myself, yet another horrible problem occurred. I was yet again destroyed as this one was almost as bad as the first one. About a month passed and I was beginning to recover. Finally one more destructive occurrence took place, my parents were going to split up and I was devastated. At this time I could no longer carry a conversation, I began to stutter and loose my train of thought almost constantly. Then I discovered that my father had been cheating on my mom, I investigated and investigated and investigated. At this point I had no way of going through my school day without going to the bathroom or counselors office to cry. I had been sleep deprived for about 3 weeks and I was not thinking straight. I found my dads bipod, which the woman he was cheating on with and looked through it, I found Scat man John's music. I began to listen to it and began to love it. Another month passed and I had memorized all of his music however continued to listen to I almost obsessively, even now I listen to it as I type. However my mental state was such where I didn't think anything could help me. I was up at 3 in the morning and crying uncontrollably. I was blaming everything on me. That morning I stole my father's very fast car, and preceded to head down the street, I was going to try and take my life. I lined my self up and floored the car, I was going about 95 miles per hour when I song popped into my head, randomly, it was U-Turn and it was the part when he says, it isn't your fault. Also I listened to let it go. These songs saved my life, and helped me repair my family. I credit scatman John to saving my life. Thank you very much

A musician of insurmountable talent and one hell of a human being. Such an inspiration. You are missed and will always be missed but you will always live on in our hearts and in your music. Be at peace, my friend, and know that people love you.

Alex Y (June 17, 2008)

How does one describe with words a most uplifting and inspirational feeling that a brilliant and beautiful human being leaves with you for the rest of your life? John did this for me, and along with my family and friends, his impact on my life is most important. It is not often that one experiences art that is created for only one reason: to exist, to be out there. Like Freddy Mercury, Beethoven, and Dostoyevsky, John Larkin only wished to leave his creation for future generations to enjoy and learn from. He did just that, his legacy will never diminish, and the amount of hope that he brought to those who share his disability will never be surpassed by anyone or anything else. R.I.P. John, I still and will always miss You.

I just now found out about scatman, I've never heard of him before, I loved scatmans world, especially the clubmix, but after reading this page, it makes me about to burst into tears, about how sad it is, i keep listening to his song. I may be younger than most of the population, but I am finding something, why is it that everybody is dying? I mean, Chris Farley, Scatman, and many others, not too long ago my principal died, but like the bible says, God takes the good ones first . -Cory

Joshua Ehlke (June 30, 2008)

Well it's been a little over a month and I have become obsessed with John's music. I saw an AMV for the scatman remix on youtube and told all my friends about this one really cool song...well I admit I had to listen to it a couple of times but the end result would've been the same if I loved it from the start. But honestly the past week I have actually started looking up his other music and it just got better from there. I LOVE Scatman's World! John's music is infectious but in a great way that words can't really explain. It was just yesterday that I found out that he died. When I found out I started to look up info about him and when I read about him my respect for him just soared to epic proportions. When I listen to his music I get this wonderful feeling of completeness and blissfulness. I really wish I could've met such a great man. You may not know me but... Rest In Peace Scatman John Larkin.

Steven Orford (July 28, 2008)

I loved all of John's songs, especially Scatmans World, at the end it looks like he is saying goodbye and when i learned that he had passed on, it kind of makes me think he knew what was coming.

He may be gone physically but he lives on in his fans' hearts.

Just Plain John

I knew John Larkin before he became Scatman John.

I had not had a chance to speak to him since about 1995. I was looking for him on the Internet and hoping to find an email address for him.

I was shocked to find a memorial website. I was not surprised that he had become so successful and so well loved all over the world. He was a lovable man.

His brain would seem to short circuit at times. The words would not come. The sounds got stuck in the depths of his being and would ruminate there for long time. People would wait in respectful silence for him to complete the word or finish the sentence.

He had a message of love and faith to deliver and he never let his speech problems stop him. He would speak up in a group, address a crowd, and have dialogs with individuals.

There was a peaceful centeredness to his presence. It made the long delays in his delivery of ideas bearable to an impatient person like myself. It was a privilege and an honor just to be in his presence.

He was just plain John to me. We met in 1988. We were part of a large group of lost and alienated souls that formed a community. Six to twenty of us, at a time, would gather over coffee. About three days out of each week we would take up a few booths. The restaurant would move small tables to form one long table for holidays when almost everyone showed up.

He lived in a modest yet neat apartment in The Valley. I stopped by there once to pick up a copy of his vinyl album. He said I did not have to come to his shows to be his friend, but he wanted me to hear his music. He wanted to share what he did, his gift to the world.

He got me to try Spicy Thai Pan Fried Noodles at a restaurant in a mini-mall across the street from my North Hollywood apartment.

He made me laugh so hard that I sprayed Coca Cola Classic all over the dashboard of his car. He laughed at that too.

We went for a walk in the park next to Laurel Plaza in North Hollywood. It was half way between the Palomino Club and the best open microphone in town. A lot of half starved musicians and actors lived there.

I let him listen to David Zasloff's first cassette tape. John was impressed with the triads and his jazz style.

John and I would find humor in very serious matters and both agreed the laugher helped us to process the pain.

When I would be going absolutely crazy, John would say: Sit still and let the universe unravel around you.

We would take long rides. Once, we were on a dirt road in the middle of Angeles National Forest with no sense of direction, but I didn't feel lost because John was with me.

Once, we were on the way back from the dead whale beach where the condors feed and it started to rain. It was a light spring rain and we stopped for pizza in Ojai. We wandered down the street into an antique shop with a grand piano. The shopkeeper let John play it. The sound resonated off the beautiful objects and added to the interior warmth as the rain kept the backbeat through the open door.

John was a very serious jazz musician and singer. He gave me his demo tape for getting bar gigs in Los Angeles. It contains about 12 cover songs. I recognized most of them. They were romantic and sweet yet uniquely John Larkin. My favorites were Springtime and Miss Jones.

His rich voice and piano playing echoed in my car often. He was off in Germany. I had moved to Seattle. His music kept us connected.

John would complain that Judy wanted to get married. I would complain that David didn't.

He married Judy and he was glad that he did. She helped him become successful. He said being successful was like walking through mud up to his neck. He did it for you, his fans. He did it for her, his true love.

His music is powerful and healing. Listen again with an open mind and receptive heart. He is sending you his love. He became Scatman so you could hear him and absorb his wisdom.

John became Scatman because he had important things to say. It was difficult for him to talk, so he sang.

In his lifetime, he was badly hurt. He overcame his demons and let in love. Listen, and you will learn to love too. Listen, if you love and you will learn about being more fully alive. Listen, and the sound will carry you through your own barriers.

I first heard Scatman John in 1995. A friend of mine always listened to new and upcoming music. I was over at his house and he started playing Scatman. Something about the song really stuck in my head. After hearing it continually for a few months I bought my own copy and have listened to it ever since. Scatman John really raised awareness of stuttering for those of us who don't stutter. When I was young I had a friend who stuttered but, I never really thought much about it. The lyric: "Everyone stutters one way or another..." really stood out in my mind and made me think about stuttering differently. I love Scatman John's music and still hear it today. His music and message will live on. His songs have been remixed and continue to resound with audiences even 14 years later. I never took the time to learn about Scatman John's personal life until today. I read his Wikipedia page and found this tribute site from Judith Kuster. I learned a lot more about John's personal life and his family and his work with the Stuttering Associations. I never realized how many people he had touched through his life and music. I miss Scatman John and wish that he was still around to make more beautiful music. His lyric: "If the Scatman can do it brother so can you...." still inspires me to this day. Goodbye Scatman John. We miss you.

I would like to share my memory with the song "Scatmans World".

It was in October 1999 at a shorttrack competition. After the individual races I was down with a terrible headache but still had to do the relay. The headache was an after effect from a nasty fall earlier that year at a training session. Almost unable to move I did go up on the ice to not let down my team. The song scatmans world started to play in the stadium and in no-time the headache was gone, and with my team we did a next to perfect race while the song was playing. And after the race the headache decided to stay away :)

27 years ago John Larkin worked with me when I was playing a club (called Maxwell's by the Sea) at the pier in Huntington Beach, CA. He was without a doubt the most amazing scat singer with whom I ever had the pleasure to work, and probably the nicest guy I could ever imagine having the pleasure of working with. I was in need of a substitute keyboard player and his name was the one that came up -- what an incredible gift that was for me. Having worked with the likes of Lionel Hampton and Blue Mitchell, I was used to being in good company, and John was just that. The best! Today somebody sent me a note regarding the time I had worked with John and so I looked him up online and was astounded to see that he's no longer with us, and terribly saddened. He truly brightened my life and I will always treasure the time I got to spend working with him. I am so sorry he is gone.

I wish I had the opportunity to see him in person while he was still here. His music will live on forever and I'm happy to add myself to his fan base.

When Scatman says something important, his look reflects something like a will of iron. Perhaps even more. The will of somebody who did cross terrible ordeals and, like a phoenix, is reborn from his ashes. Very special.

John Scatman was a great man.
When rain falls, his song is sun
When hate rises, his song is freedom
Let me know where Scatland is...

Scatman John really changed my view on things. While I don't stutter, sometimes I mix up my words ( I believe that's called stammering) and sometimes I do stutter, though very rarely. He showed not to be afraid of your problems and to live life to the fullest. While I didn't find out about him until 2006, after doing research and just listening to his songs, (very hard with the limited amount on iTunes, but I've been recently getting his CDs from eBay) I've learned he was a truly pure man, and believed in peace and, well, everything good. He is a true impact on my life, and has changed me forever (in a good way, mind you). R.I.P. John!

With the recent deaths of celebrities such as Micheal Jackson and Billy Mays, these are sad times for many people. I know that I personally enjoyed Billy May's unique selling style.

However, one celebrity death still touches me to this day and I get emotional when I think about it. That is the death of Scatman John. Regardless of my current mood, his music always seems to be able to cheer me up. Regardless of my current mood, remembering his death always seems to make me sad. As I type this, I am both listening to his music and remembering his death. Washing through my mind are thoughts of both joy and sadness.

Scatman John was a man with many ideals I subscribe to. Also many that I did not. He was a good man, though. Although his heart was certainly able to produce anger, it is hard for me to imagine that he ever did. He brings such a message of hope in songs that, when you hear them, you just know everything will be okay.

You know, I plan to write books one of these days. There's so many people I want to dedicate my books to. My parents. My teachers. My friends. But one person that I absolutely must dedicate a book to is Scatman John.

He's in Scatland now...

That's where he belongs.

Unforgotten until now

I discovered "Scatman's World" and all the other songs when I was 13 (or 14?). John was the first popstar I listened to - and I listened very often (my family still knows...). Soon I learned about the personal background of "Scatman John" - and I realized the message in the texts and between the lines. Especially the entire album "Everybody Jam!" made me think about humanity, life and so on. I heard about John's death when I was looking for a new Scatman CD in 1999 (and found "Take Your Time")... Until today Scatman John inspires me - also as a beginning evangelical pastor who needs to know about humanity, life and so on.

Rest in peace, Scatman!

Odd Carsten, Norway (July 30, 2010)

I remember it quite well, the early years of mu childhood. I belive i was about 7-8 when i first heard about John. Me and my friends loved the music, listended to it all the time.

The local clubs for kids played it and we truly loved it.

It also made my older brothers life easier, as he was a stutterer. He often refused to speak in public etc but John, though we/he never met him in person, gave my brother the courage to be who he was.

The day i heard of his death, even though i was only 9/10 years old, made a huge impression on me. We had lost a legend in music aswell in the struggle for stutterers to be accepted as who they are.

My hat off to this man, he was, is and will be a legend in modern music and Jazz.

John Dolan, England (August 5, 2010)

Even though it's been 11 years I still miss Scatman every day. I remember back in the mid 90s I used to look forward to the winter when our record stores would get the latest Scatman single on import. Then the internet came along and it was easier to pick up Johns CDs from Japan etc. Without fail they always put a smile on my face, sometimes brought a tear to my eye.

Scatman John was the first Popstar I took seriously, because he genuinely looked like he was having fun and believed what he said. There was never any falseness or facade about him, he seemed very genuine. His music was fun, exciting, emotional and uplifting and he certainly had an X Factor about him which raised him far above his contemperaries.

John was a wonderful man, in the August before his death I spoke to him over the phone (Thanks to my friend Gina) he was as charming and as down to earth as you would expect, he even scat sung for me. It's one of my fondest memories and I'm gratefull I had a chance to interact with my hero in this way. I felt a very real sence of loss at his passing, that such a man who had been so inspirational and made such wonderful music could be taken from us didn't seem fair.

It's gratifying that since his death he has not been forgotten. Mark Oh released a cover/sample of Scatman last year and Internet character Gummi Bear included a cover on it's album. Thanks to YouTube and the footage I collected during his career I now have a 3 DVD set of videos, performances and interviews that will always remind me of what a special influence the man had on my life.

I will never forget John and whenever anybody asks me what my favourite music is, Scatman John is always the first name off my lips.

I never met John while he was alive, but he spoke to me through his music and love. When I found an "I'm the Scatman" amv online, I instantly loved it and wanted to hear more of this music, which led me to "Scatman's World" and that was it. Since then I've listened to as many of his songs I could find, and have been moved to tears on several occasions. His heart was true, his voice pure, and his life simple, but thats all it takes to live a happy life.

Where i live, all the kids in my high school are violent and mean, always trying to "rap" either hate and pain, or complete nonsense. There's nothing but greed in their voices and filth in their words, but when i hear that unforgettable voice and his famous scat I feel clean, clear headed, and as if maybe theres still a chance that my classmates will be introduced to the love of John and the beauty of Scatland.

John, I know you're up there in Heaven right now, maybe even singing for the Big Guy Himself and every angel among the clouds, but i want you to know that i will pass your message of love on too as many people as i can, so don't worry about your voice fading away and go give God a taste of Scatland, the OTHER eternal paradise.

I remember the very first time I heard I'm the Scatman on the radio, I was 16 and had just gotten my license. Of course one of the joys of being able to drive a car by yourself is to be able to crank the radio. When the song first came on I couldn't believe what I was hearing!! It was unlike anything that had ever graced my ears before and I was instantly hooked. I ran to the record store and bought the album right away and listened to it at least 10 times that night. There are very few songs written and performed that you can listen too indefinitely without ever growing tired of them but this is one of them. The other day the video was on TV and my 5 year old daughter and 2 year old son immediately started dancing to it and smiling, more proof that this song is truly timeless. I wish I had the chance to meet John, it would have been an honor.

I have listenend to Scatman my whole life. I'm 16 years old. We had the cassette when I was born and I have listened to that because it was so good, especially on road trips. I had it with me everywhere because i like the music. It brings back many memories from early life and road trips.

My name is Alvaro Bayona, I am a 24 year old student from Lima, Peru who lived his childhood in Malaysia. Scatman John's music was very popular during my time there, and listening to it definitely brings back very good childhood memories. I noticed that not many people on youtube made covers of his songs, so one day I felt inspired to give it a shot, although with a very different spin to it (all acoustic instruments as opposed to the electronic style he adopted later on in his career). If you wish, you can take a look at my version of "Scatman" at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nOAmyMKgNY and hopefully it'll bring a smile to your face, and serve as proof that his music has inspired people from all over the world.

Scatman gives us hope. And that's a lot. A lot.

Jakob Z. from New Jersey (sent April 16, 2011)

I am thirteen year. I never really got to experience the best of music like John or anything. Now I am stuck with all of this rap and pop. I just wanted to say that Scatman John's message has turned my life around for the better and if he was still alive I wish I would be able to shake his hand. God took him because he loved his music so much I suppose. I am not really good with ending messages like this so... R.I.P Scatman John is all I can say.

Cyrus A. (sent September 7, 2011)

I am 15 and i never listened to Scatman until my friend showed it to me and when he told me that he had passed away my heart sank. Thank you Scatman you have reached out to me even after you have died I really hope Scatman will not be forgotten.

Chris B. from New Zealand (sent October 3, 2011)

I really liked the song "I'm the Scatman" and was looking for information on the internet about the singer and came across your site. I also read his article on wikipedia. I was quite moved by the comment attributed to him that "Whatever God wants is fine by me. . . . I've had the very best life. I have tasted beauty" - pretty much sums up my own attitude to the mystery that is this life. God bless you.

KS (sent October 11, 2011)

My life has been full of emotional issues. Three times have I prepared to kill myself. Three times has the Scatman's music saved my life. And I spread it around whenever I get the chance. It has helped at least three other people who I linked to the songs.

I dreamt I saw Scatman John last night, alive as you and me. . .

- a blog post.

Christopher Winnard (UK, December 11, 2012)

I was told many years ago of the passing of John (Scatman), to which i send my deepest sympathies. I was given a copy of the album 'Scatman's World' by my Aunt for Christmas many years ago. I have loved listening to it over and over (to this day, i cannot scat like Scatman). Unfortunately, the album (Scatman's World) had been damaged and will not play but it is still treasured in my music collection as a mark of respect to the legend - John Paul Larkin. Rest In Peace Scatman. You brought joy to millions around the globe. I'm not classing your passing as a total loss to us 'Earth People' but more like a new beginning to those you are now with who may never have had the chance to listen to you in action. Scatman......you will live on in our memories for eternity.

Awan (Indonesia, October 11, 2013)

This morning, in all of a sudden, a song from my childhood times suddenly rang in my mind. I spent my morning to browse youtube videos of Scatman John, and go on wiki-ing about him. Its kinda ironic that I've just learned that John Larkin had some stuttering issue on his past. And kinda sad too when today, for the first time in my life, I've learned that John has passed away back in '99. (Well, its not about my place is isolated or anything, but Indonesia had a really hard time back in 1999). Surely, I'm gonna missed John Larkin. But his memory and his scats live on. I'm very proud to say that I have lived back when Scatman John scats :)

Scatman John - An Amazing Person in our Hearts Forever. March 13th, 1942 - December 3, 1999. It has been almost 15 years since his depressing passing... Yet, that doesn't mean we'll forget about him, heck no! He was amazing and really helped people. I may not be a stutterer myself, but I know a few and his songs have really helped them. No wonder he got the American Speech Language Hearing Association Annie Glenn Award for outstanding service to the stuttering community and National Stuttering Association Hall of Fame! I wouldn't call myself a Scatman "fanatic", since I rely on online downloads for my music. So far, I have the complete 'Scatman's World' and 'Everybody Jam!' albums. And in my opinion, they're amazing. I love them! Everybody Jam, Scatman's World, U-Turn, Let it Go, (HAH! SCATMAN DID IT FIRST, TAKE THAT DISNEY!) Stop the Rain, Popstar, his Scatman remixes, his cover of The Invisible Man, and there's plenty more to mention! It's just sad to believe he's gone... You just don't realize what you lost until you lose it, and I can say that about musicians like Michael Jackson as well, Doggone... He seemed like an amazing and cool guy to hang out with. Always positive. Even while suffering, saying 'Whatever God wants is fine by me ... I've had the very best life. I have tasted beauty." Amazing indeed. Anyways, it's time to cut this off. Good Night, Take Care everybody. And, Rest in Peace, Scatman John. We miss you.

This Must Be Said - I'm assuming multiple messages are composed daily regarding the amazing accomplishments of John, but I have to give my own thanks. I didn't know him personally - far from it, in fact. I was born two years prior to his unfortunate death. I was too young to know him or know music as a whole. I wouldn't discover his Scatman song until I was in the 4th grade, and I fell in love with him and his message. It's a simple one, really: love each other. Simple, but beautiful. So much so that I remember being close to tears when I realized he had been dead for ten years and I knew nothing about it.

I prefer metal music, but I always go back to the Scatman; from his early 1986 John Larkin debut to his last hurrah, Take Your Time. His music is wonderful.

He never cared for being a pop star. He cared for getting a positive message out, and people are still impacted by it to this day, including me. I try my best to care for those around me, love everyone with all of my heart, and always keep an open mind and never commit violence. His music is a philosophy to live on, and I intend to carry it to my grave.

I partake in singing lessons... who knows, maybe one day I'll pick up the art of scat-singing myself. All I know is, no matter how old I get, I'll always be listening to John Paul Larkin and his amazing, uplifting message.

I wish I could have met him but I was 2 years old by then. He shall be in everyone's heart always.

Pavel Kirkovsky (November 5, 2014)

Many people seem to dismiss Larkin's Scatman music as trite eurodance, having only heard his radio hits. His songs are catchy and seem simple at first, but careful listening reveals much greater depth to his music. Larkin centers many of his songs on themes we don't often hear in popular music these days: self-acceptance, self-forgiveness, mindfulness, acceptance of others, and the hope of making a better world for everyone. His experience with addiction and recovery contributes heavily to his message, and his musical work seems therapeutic to his audience as well as himself. John brought a lot of raw emotion and authenticity to his work, speaking candidly about hard lessons learned during his life and the importance of bringing those lessons to a greater audience (the song "Hey You" is a great example). I encountered his music when I was young and it had a profound impact on me. John's positive messages have stayed with me ever since and helped me out during tough times.

Scatman John changed my life forever. I too have a stuttering problem. He taught me to never give up and to turn my weaknesses into strengths. Not only that his song People of the Generation made me cry, his songs are so peaceful while at the same time being an eye opener.

Edvard Bishof (Sweden, March 17, 2015)

When I was four years old I decided not to pretend and act like "All the GrownUPS Do" and somewhere on the way during the next 30 years of different human experiences I forgot what I promised myself as a child in so called Yugoslavia later so called Bosnia and Herzegovina. I believe now that this wonderful human being that called himself Scatman John was a True Shaman of the modern age. I got this insight TONIGHT at almost 35 years old and after listening to all kinds of music. I discovered in my opinion one of the best masters of the art of jazzlove in his music of this genius. I know that people like John should have a memorial built for them in all the major cities in the world instead of so-called leaders of the people. Deepest respect for everything that Scatman John stood for. (www.edvardbisof.tumblr.com)

Memories came back yesterday to the time when I was a teenager listening to Scatman John, "Ski Ba Bop Ba Dop Bop". In a store with my own two young daughters and the song came on first time ever they heard it and they danced around the store with big smiles a great moment and brought me back to my younger days as well. A great talent and a truly gifted person is not in our presence but still making people smile so many years on. Sleep well John may God look after you and thanks for making my daughters day. We will always continue to listen.

I just wanted to add my personal experience. I know it sounds a lot like everyone else's, but it's mine nonetheless. When I was a child, say high-school, I heard his songs, I knew of them and knew them. When I first heard his music, I was an innocent, I was a child with a friend; we listened to this music all the time. Little did we know what future would bring us.It didn't mean a whole lot to me then. It must have been not more than a year after his death that I heard his music, and during this time, continuing through today, I have been a very angry, anti-social person. I have had little to no faith in humanity in general. His music, despite certain critics' opinion, has made me think that maybe, just maybe, the world isn't the way I perceive it. Maybe, there are people like myself; maybe we are so apart that we can't see each other, maybe that's our problem. I wish there were more like him, so pure in heart, so pure in meaning, that they knew where they're music could have its greatest effect. I've spent so much of my life angry at the rest of the world; the anger; the ignorance; the hatred - I developed a hatred for it all. But, his music, his lyrics, they made me think again.

"I'm The Scatman" is a song that has always stuck in my head, a real feel good song, so I played it for my 10 year old son recently and he absolutely loved it so we play it all the time. A very charismatic guy. I was shocked so see on the internet that he is no longer with us. I don't know why but it moved me to tears. It was great to read about the meaning of the song and how he helped people so much. I don't normally write stuff on forums but I just wanted to say he still brings happiness now and he's an example to us all about living life."

Steve (Halifax, Nova Scotia) (November 7, 2017)

Hello! I came across Scatman John - I'm The Scatman while working as a night manager at a McDonalds. I'm 27, I grew up listening to classic rock, I now prefer old school or underground hip hop, but my taste also includes the likes of Sinatra, Martin, Cash, etcÉ. Last night, at work, I was so into my ridiculous dancing, which is really just jumping around in short bursts while scatting, I managed to fall down - a feat I've avoided for quite a while haha! I was 5 when Scatman's World was released, and I'll never outgrow this incredible, positive, unifying music. After looking into Scatman John more, I was immediately saddened to learn he passed away in 1999, but incredibly inspired by how he not only challenged his speaking condition, but turned it into something so fantastic and positive. Absolutely incredible! Much love!

It's crazy to think that I never heard of this man. Listening to this music in 2018 brings me back to my 20's. He has such a knack for creating a catchy tune that can be listened to over and over and over again. What a joy it is to listen to this music to start my day...a truly talented man.

Lynne MacVean (March 22, 2018)

I've been enjoying John's songs and message for years, and it occurred to me today to look up more information about him. I am extremely sad to understand that he passed already.

I'm so inspired by John, how he managed to take his challenge and turn it into one of his greatest strengths. He was brilliant at scat singing, a true master, and his message was so uplifting and encouraging for those of us with struggles that most people do not understand or have compassion for. I only hope I can follow in his footsteps and leave behind some art that will inspire, encourage, reassure, and recharge others.

I was hoping there might be a memorial I could visit someday, and yet this online memorial is at least as good if not better. My textual tribute will last longer than any flowers I might have placed on his grave, and be far more specific to why he matters to me and why I felt the need to leave a tribute.

John N. (September 2, 2018)

I've been a fan of John Larkin's music for about 3 years now, which started when I wanted to try something new and listened to all of the Scatman's World album. I've only recently started to see the impact that his music had on me emotionally, and just how massively his music means to me. I've started to collect John's music on all formats earlier this year, and didn't even know until late 2017 that he had a jazz album in the mid 80s, and appeared on a Sam Phipps album even earlier (as im typing this, I am waiting for my copy to come in the mail, so that my first listen will be straight from vinyl). It's a shame too, as his self titled album is amazing (It however is pretty pricey, my copy was brand new still in shrink, and around 100 dollars, though it was worth every penny). I really wish that Scatman's World (album, not single) on Vinyl wasn't impossible to find, as it has become my all time favorite album. Rest in peace John, I feel a lot better about myself knowing that I share the same first name as my favorite artist.

The song "Scatman (ski-ba-bop-ba-dop-bop)" is one I've heard constantly growing up in the early 2000's through various outlets. I find myself here in 2018 still listening to all of the tracks Scatman has produced over his active musical years. His combination of jazz and europop is unlike any artist. Scatman will always be an artist that I can tune into whenever I'm feeling blue in order to instantly lift my spirits. Thank you very much

Pedro E. from Brazil (posted October 15, 2018)

I discovered John's music when I was a child. In the early 2000s, his songs were hits in Brazil. Actually, John's recordings were popular in the country since 1995. "Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)" peaked at the 93th position on the brazilian charts. But in the 2000s, his songs were popularized once again. I heard "Scatman" for the first time in 2005. I really liked the song and I started singing it since then. In 2009, I watched John's music video for "Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)", and then I became interested in his music, his scat singing and his unique style. There was no doubt that I really enjoyed his songs. In 2010, I discovered two of his hits: "Scatman's World" and "Only You". Then, I started listening to his songs more often. The rhythm, the melody and the inspiring lyrics present in his hits are amazing and unique. In the beginning of this year, I started listening to his Jazz recordings and they're also very nice. John was an amazing jazz artist. The sound of the piano and his scat singing were a good combination. Recently, I listened to some songs from his last album, "Take Your Time", and they're also unique. John sure made a huge contribution to the music scene and inspired many people all over the world with his message.

It's been almost exactly 20 years since Larkin's parting but he still brings so much joy and inspiration to so many people. Thank you for running this website and thank John for being an amazing person.

Growing up in the early 2000s, I used to hear a lot of clips of of John's music paired with 2D animation through a service called Flipnote Hatena on the Nintendo DS. For whatever reason, John's work is what I remember most vividly about that service. There's something really special about Scatman telling people that they can do anything through a medium that boils down to a process of self-improvement. A lot of the people who did these animations were kids just like myself. John Larkin once said, "I hope that the kids, while they sing along to my songs or dance to it, feel that life is not that bad at all. Even for just a minute". If the Scatman was still with us, he'd be proud to know that he made life seem not that bad for a lot of young people, possibly more than he could have ever imagined.

Thank you for maintaining this website in memory of John. I did not know of him until recently... I am 26 years old and was listening to a mix of 90's music and was surprised to not have known this song already(Scatman). It was very catchy, but more importantly the lyrics in the "rap" part left an impression on me with how honest and simple his message was.

There were a lot of one hit artists in the 90s but his style in the 90s (before modern electronic dance) was a surprise to me and I decided to look into his career. He must have had such an incredible career!

This was when I learned he passed away young, and also that he passed away shortly (within a few years) of achieving fame. I read about his life and how he struggled with stuttering, how he would not sing due to his stuttering nature, and later his agent suggested combining his scat singing with modern dance and hip hop music. While hesitant, and with the advice of his wife, he decided to face his stuttering issue head-on, and even make reference to it in his music.

I'm saddened by his death, but the more I learn about John, the more I realize that life always gives us chance to make an impact on those around us. His music is such a pleasure because it is so honest. I'm glad I can carry on the memory of John, posthumously. I'm going to tell my son about Scatman John and how he made his weakness his greatest strength -- what an amazing example!

Nicolas A, Texas, December 30, 2020

I may not have been alive for John's life, but he's my hero. The Scatman was a special man, he gave you a message in his music and he means what he says. Scatman John was an amazing man and I adore him.

Scatman has helped me with the hardest part of life and his music and message stays with you and just has the power to motivate you no matter what. I was on the verge of suicide when I decided to listen to Scatman and it was like he listened, everything he said gave me more and more confidence and I thank him from up above for it.

He is dearly missed and I hope when my time comes, I will see him in Scatland.
