Walk and Talk around the World Christine Simpson 8/13/99

In celebration of the second annual International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD), Christine Simpson, a member of the British Stammering Association, is organizing a sponsored walk in London, England on Sunday, October 24, 1999. The "walk and talk" will be routed via sites connected with famous stammerers.

To truly make this a worldwide event, Christine would like to contact people who stutter around the world who would be interested in organizing a sponsored walk in their country. All proceeds would go to their local stuttering organization.

Christine's aim is to have a series of walks around the world, all happening on the same day, Sunday, October 24, 1999, called "Walk and Talk around the World."

In a sponsored walk, each participant asks friends, family and colleagues to donate a specified amount of money per mile or kilometer walked by the sponsored participant; or a sponsor can choose to pledge an amount to a participant for simply participating in the walk. The walk is usually around five (5) miles but it can be longer or shorter.

One of the aims of "Walk and Talk around the World" is to increase awareness of stuttering, so please invite your friends and/or relatives to walk with you. They will have the opportunity to learn more about stuttering, and get to know other people who stutter as well as you.

If you are interested in organizing a walk, or have other ideas for an event that could be included in "Walk and Talk around the World", please contact Christine Simpson at 108 Salmon Street, Kingsbury, London, NW9 8NJ, United Kingdom. Telephone: 011 44 181 205 7678 ------ E-mail: christine2@squirrel58.freeserve.co.uk -- Christine will be happy to answer questions about how to organize one of these events and will give support to anyone wanting to participate.

For more information, check out the Walk and Talk around the World web site at http://www.atyrer.demon.co.uk/walktalk/index.htm which will be updated regularly.

MY TV Appearance Ira Zimmerman 10/19/99

In honor of ISAD, I appeared on the "Kurt the Cyberguy" segment on the Los Angeles KTLA-TV morning and evening news programs on Monday, October 18th. I told a funny and ironic story about my stuttering computer problem with America Online (AOL) and how the Cyberguy helped me resolve it. For months, when I signed onto AOL, I would not get passed the verbal "Welcome" greeting which froze my computer up with a loud "WelWelWel Wel...". After help from the Cyberguy and AOL top Executives, my computer is mostly stutter-free. At any point, the reason I told my story on TV was to prove that stutterers do have a sense of humor and can laugh at themselves. I think it is important to humanize the problem of stuttering.

I understand that "Kurt the Cyberguy" syndicates his segments to local TV news stations around the country. So you might be seeing this segment on your local TV station.

If you want a copy of this TV segment to lighten your local NSA chapter meeting, please contact me at irazimmy@aol.com .

ISAD 99 in Iceland Benedikt Benediktsson 10/20/99

The main event around the ISAD in Iceland is the open house we are having in Reykjavik on october 21st. In order to advertize the open day and ISAD as much as possible, we have done the following. * An approx. 5 minutes appearance in one of the two most popular tv stations on prime time, tuesday october 19th, featuring a well known radio person who stutters, a stutterer and an SLP. * Interviews on two of the most popular radiostations, one in the morning of oct. 21st and one in the afternoon. * Newspaper articles about stuttering and ISAD in the most widely distributed newspaper on october 20th, 21st and 22nd. * Our press release printed in various media.

We hope that this will bring the attention to stuttering and that the open house will help us get in contact with more stutterers and parents of stuttering children.

Open Line for People Who Stutter in Israel Jeremy Sulzbacher 10/21/99

Jerusalem - An open line for people who stutter will operate for the first time in Israel on Sunday, October 24th from 9:00 - 17:00 at 02-9968002. Calls will be taken in Hebrew, Russian and English.

Latvian-born Israeli Arye Friedman, developer of Dr. Fluency, the only self-help software therapy program for people who stutter around the world, is operating the line to give support to people who stutter and to raise awareness about stuttering in Israeli society.

Friedman, who stuttered heavily from childhood, and is now almost 100% fluent as a result of practicing consistently with Dr. Fluency, feels that there is a lack of understanding toward people who stutter. "People who stutter are no less intelligent than other people," says Friedman. Friedman was a physics doctoral student at Ben Gurion University when he was asked to be a teaching assistant, but was unable to accept due to his heavy stutter. He then took an intensive precision fluency shaping course at Hadassah Hospital's Speech and Hearing Center, where he got the idea to develop a computerized fluency shaping therapy program.

Friedman's Dr. Fluency multimedia software gives people who stutter the tools to maintain lifelong fluency. Dr. Fluency is currently available in Hebrew, English, German and in Sweden it is a recognized stuttering therapy by the Ministry of Health. Localization into Dutch, Russian and Arabic are under development.

Friedman will be demonstrating Dr. Fluency at the 2nd Annual Conference of the Israel Stuttering Association October 21st, at 7:00 p.m. at Beit Leni in Tel Aviv. Minister of Education Yossi Sarid will be the main speaker, followed by comedian Tuvia Safir. The conference marks International Stuttering Awareness Day, celebrated on October 22nd, 1999.

ISAD99 in Argentina Beatriz Biain de Touzet 3/26/00

Our ISAD was an important event at the University of Buenos Aires with a Seminar about Stuttering for speech pathologist, an intervention at a Pediatric Congress with a "Mask Dance" with people who stutter, speech pathologist and parents with posters telling about prevention and the risk to wait on stuttering. You can imagine the faces when we came into the congres during the session! The most important was that we were together with the same idea and spirit.
