What is Health and Physical Education?

The Health and Physical Education major prepares teacher candidates to effectively teach K-12 students about physical and health literacy to ensure these students have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a health enhancing physically active lifestyle.

The curriculum offers health and physical education content courses and pedagogy courses that provide teacher candidates opportunities to learn and apply their knowledge to design and implement health and physical education lessons. The health and physical education faculty utilize active learning strategies, small group collaboration, and project-based learning.

Ideal candidates for the Health and Physical major should:

Where Is It Offered?

The Bachelor of Science in Physical Education-DAPE major is offered in full on Minnesota State University, Mankato’s main campus in Mankato, Minnesota. Teacher candidates will participate in field experiences in the K-12 public schools in the surrounding area.

Program Requirements

  • For specific program requirements:
  • Program Policies:
    • A minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA within the major and 2.75 within professional education
  • Program Progression Standards:
    • "C-" in all required general education (except Chemistry)
    • "C-" in all pre-requisite courses (except BIOL 220: Human Anatomy)
    • "C-" grade in major common core courses
