Bags full of cigarette butts found on campus

Research conducted by students and faculty in the Department of Health Science showed that despite a no tobacco policy on the campus of Minnesota State University, Mankato, the amount of tobacco debris—such as cigarette butts—showed otherwise.

This information, along with the role that smoking or vaping could play in making someone more susceptible to COVID-19 complications, led Minnesota State Mankato to update the campus tobacco policy so it meets the national standards for a 100% Tobacco-Free campus policy.

The University now joins the list of nearly 2,500 campuses across the country and 16 Minnesota campuses that have this distinction.

The updated policy states that there is no tobacco use of any kind (e-cigarettes, cigarettes, cigars, or smokeless tobacco products) permitted on ANY university property including but not limited to parking lots, sidewalks, or inside personal cars. The policy went into effect August 1, 2020.
