Camp Maverick: Rec N' Read, a youth literacy intervention and recreation camp to be held in June
The Departments of Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services and Speech, Hearing and Rehabilitation Services are once again offering a literacy intervention and recreation camp throughout the month of June to help children in kindergarten through fifth grades make important gains in literacy and well-being over the summer. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this camp will be virtual.
The camp, called Camp Maverick – Rec N' Read, will be held from June 8-26. Registration for the camp will include access to the demonstration videos, take-home kits for all activities and lessons and live sessions with literacy and recreation experts.
The camp will feature three week-long themes – "Into the Wild," "My Spy Academy," and "My Space Exploration" – intended to keep children interested in reading and recreation. The camp kits cost $35 weekly, but financial assistance is available. For additional information, contact Minnesota State Mankato faculty members Megan Mahowald or Brooke Burk at campmaverick@mnsu.edu.
The Mankato Clinic Foundation, Otto Bremer Trust, and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources are also providing support for the camp.
