Expert Lecture – Developing Family Care & Communication Skills in Simulation

The Van Gelderen Family Care Rubric (VGFCR) was developed to provide nurse educators with a research-based tool to measure the family communication and assessment skills of healthcare students and staff during the debriefing stage of simulation. The rubric focuses on and measures the skills needed for optimum family nursing practice. Delegates attending the workshop will observe a pediatric simulation and participate in a debrief session at Maverick Family Nursing Simulation Center, utilizing the VGFCR to give formative feedback to participants. Participants will also explore ways to incorporate the VGFCR into their own simulation and educational programs.

Wednesday, August 12:  9:00am – 4:00 pm  Expert lecture (TBA), podium and poster sessions

Expert Lecture – Digital Storytelling

Using digital stories has potential to transform nursing education by encouraging reflection and developing empathy for families and nurse peers. This talk explains the distinctions between two approaches for creating digital stories: Digital Storytelling (DST), as established by Lambert (2010) and generic digital storytelling (GDS). Understanding these differences can help practitioners and researchers determine which method may be most appropriate for their future projects.  Additionally, the talk will place an emphasis on options for reducing technical and logistic barriers commonly experienced in research utilizing digital stories.

Thursday, August 13:  Post-conference sessions with experts
