Southern MN Recreation and Park Association Student Scholarship - Deadline October 31, 2018

The SMRPA Scholarship was established to recognize those students pursuing a degree in the field of Recreation, Parks and/or leisure studies at Minnesota State University - Mankato or Winona State University.  One or more scholarships, equaling $1000 each, will be distributed each academic year, following the recommendation by the Review Committee.

Applicants must be enrolled as full time students; must be declared RPLS majors with either Junior or Senior standing; demonstrate a minimum GPA of 2.50, within the major; have successfully completed a minimum of 12 credits of course work with RPLS or RTTR prefix; documented evidence of work or volunteering in recreation or related field; and complete a personal essay.  Application deadline is Noon, October 31st, 2018.  See your advisor for complete requirements and how to apply.  

Minnesota Recreation and Park Foundation Student Scholarship - Deadline November 2, 2018

The MRPF scholarship is for juniors or seniors majoring in a a park and recreation major and attending a four-year curriculum at a Minnesota institution or a permanent Minnesota resident attending a neighboring state.  The scholarship program includes up to 5 $2000 scholarship.  Students may only receive this scholarship once.  Eligibiltiy is student must be a junior or senior; have a minimum GPA of 2.8 overall and 3.0 major; and be enrolled in a program with parks and recreation emphasis.  Deadline is November 2, 2018 at 11:59 pm.  Please see your advisor for complete requirements and how to apply.  

Volunteer Opportunities

Darby's Dancers, Dance Express

Dance Express is proud to add the new special needs program "Darby's Dancers" to its schedule.  Darby's Dancer program is designed to provide dance education to children with special needs at no cost to their families and offer a foundation for inclusion with other dancers within an established dance organization.  Each child is paired with a volunteer that acts as their personal coach.  No dance experience is required.  Contact Dance Express for more information at 507-625-3865 or  


STRIDE is for boys grades 3-5, STRIDE TOO is for boys grades 6-8.  The YMCA is looking for volunteer coaches that can meet twice a week for 90 minutes beginning September 12th and ending on November 29th.  Coaches must attend a STRIDE training session and be avialble for the 5K race on Saturday, November 17th.  All curriculum and materials are supplied and coaches receive support along the way.  Contact Molly Abrose if interested at

Cedar Haven Lutheran Home, Mankato

We are an Assisted Living Facility and we have volunteer opportunities in our recreation department.  We are a small facility of 15-25 residents.  We typically have rotation of cards, board games, bingo, arts and crafts and some exercise classes.  We do occasional outings and shopping.  If you are interested in volunteering your time contact Becki Staley at

Bradford Woods, Martinsville, IN

Bradford Woods is Indiana University's Outdoor Center and is supported by the Riley Children's Foundation and Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.  Bradford Woods operates 10 weeks of Recreation Therapy summer camps for children with cancer, sickle cell anemia, cerbral palsy, craniofacial anomalies, hearing loss, muscular dystrophy, autism, various physical disabilitie, rare genetic disorders, and Down syndrome.  

Bradford Woods is currently recruiting for summer of 2019.  Bradford Woods has proven to be an excellent opporunity for students in the filed of Recreation Therapy.  Bradford Woods has also served as an internship and practicum site for mnay TR/RT students, fulfilling the requirements for the NCTRC by being supervised and guided by a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.  Full information can be found:  

Department of Children and Families, State of Florida

At the Northeast Florida State Hopsital (NEFSH) Recreational Therapy Program, interns are supervised by a certified Therapeutic Recreation Specilaist (CTRS) on a daily basis.  Interns have the opportunitiy to work with multiple full-time CTRS' in both Adult and Geriatric mental Health settings.  INterns progressivley experience the responsibilities of a full-time Rehabilitation Therapist.  Two interns will be accepted for each semester.  NEFSH provides free housing to all Recreational Therapy interns.  Application deadlines are: Fall Intership - April 30th, Spring Internship - September 15th, Summer Internship - January 31st.  For full description of the program click here: www.dcf.state/fl/us/facilities/nefsh/docs/CTRSinternshipbrochure.pdf 

The Estates at St. Louis Park - Monarch Healthcare Management

This internship site is a skilled nursing facility located in St. Louis Park, MN.  We specialize in residents who have mental health diagnosis'.  These diagnosis' include: Depression, Anxiety, Dementia, MS, Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, personality disorder, schizoaffective disorder, and others.  Our Therapeutic Recreatioin Department is responsible for therapeutic programs and activities according to the overall plan of care for residents.  More information can be found at: https://monarchmn.come/the-estates-at-st-louis-park/

The Arc of San Diego, CA

The Arc of San Diego is a non-profit organziation that provices services and support to people with developmental disabilities.  The Arc of San Diego is a premier providers of disability services thtat empoers its clients to achieve their life goals.  The Personal and Leisure Services Intern will assist in the implementation of Leisure Express Local and Leisure Express Trip and Travel programs.  The intern will assis with Our Place Wellness Center fitness programs.  The minimum commitment for this opportunity is 15 consecutive weeks, 600 hours.  for further information please contact Joseph at  

Out & About, Lafayette, CO

Out & About offers an internship in Therapeutic Recreation, supervised by a CTRS.  The purpose of the internship is to provide students with an professional, educational, and enjoyable internship by offering the opportunity to work with people that have developmental disabilities.  Out & About provides recreation activities in three area: Catalog Services, After School Program, Summer Camp.  Summer internship apply by Feb. 15, Fall internship apply by June 15, Spring internship apply by October 15.  For more information:  

Department of State Hospitals, Coalinga, Fresno County, CA

Challenge Alaska, Anchorage, AK

Augustana Care, Minneapolis, MN

Augustana Care is a non-profit organization that provides senior housing, health care and community-based services to older generations and others in need and helps residents live the lives that most inspire them.  The therapeutic programs has certified recreational therapist on staff for students who are looking for an internship that has recreational therapists certified by NCTRC.  MN interns would be working with a geriatric population.  Contact information: or 612-238-5419.

Camp High Hopes, Sioux City, IA

Camp High Hopes offers recreational/camp based internships in 3 primary seasons: September - December, January-April, and May-August, for a 14 week internship period designed to meet the requirements for NCTRC.  Interns will assist in assessment, planning, implementation/facilitation, and evaluation during CHH activities which are goal oriented and directed toward rehabilitation, amelioration, and/or modification of specific physical, emotional, cognitive, and/or social functional behaviors.  Responsibilities may include: client assessments, progress notes, discharge plans, activity analysis, and leisure education among others.  Interns will receive room and board during sessions and monthly stipend of $100 to offset additional food costs.  Shared staff housing may be available and is assessed based on intern needs and housing availability.  All internships are full time commitments without time for outside work or part-time jobs and may require a commitment to be away from during holidays depending on the program schedule.  For more information or to apply:, email:, phone 712-224-2267.  

Patton State Hospital, San Bernardino, CA

Patton treats approximately 1500 patients who have been committed by the judicial system for mental health services.  We currently employ 30 Recreation Therapists who work under the Rehabilitation Therapy Department along with Dance, Music, Art and Occupational Therapies.  The PSH Recreation Therapy Internship program is 16 weeks in duration with each cycle beginning on the 1st of the month.  We accept one intern for the spring, summer and fall semesters.  The deadline for applying for each of these internship periods are as follows: February 1st for summer, April 1st for fall, and August 1st for winter/spring.  RT Internship applications are available upon request.  We are currently able to provide a paid internship and also offer affordable on grounds housing upon request.  Each Recreation Therapy Intern will be supervised by a NCTRC certified Recreation Therapist and will gain experience in following the care of patients on their supervisor's caseload.  For more information regarding Patton State Hospital, please visit the website:
