The Rehabilitation Counseling Program (RCP) at MSU, M is fully accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) through 2023 (See http://www.cacrep.org) Ours is a 48-credit hour master's level program (FTP) serving the upper Midwest The majority of new students begin the program in fall semesters, but we also admit in spring. Likewise, most students attend full-time and complete the program within 1 ½ to 2 calendar years. We also provide for students on a part-time basis, who typically complete their studies within 2 ½ to 3 calendar years. As a result of this, graduation numbers have varied in recent years from as few as 2 to as many as 13 graduating students in a semester. On a yearly average, the total number of students in the program typically varies between 15-20 students, whether these are incoming or advanced students. We also have a 100% program completion rate across full- and part-time students.
The average cost for an on-campus graduate student taking 6 credits is approximately $2500.00 per semester, and double that for 12 credits per semester. The RCP, its parent Department of Speech, Hearing, & Rehabilitation Services, and the University offer competitive scholarships and graduate assistantship opportunities to assist students with their expenses. Additionally, student scholarships are awarded annually through the Minnesota Rehabilitation Counselors and Educators Association (MRCEA).
Approximately 70% of our current students are from underrepresented or minority groups, including people with disabilities. Student performance outcomes are evaluated each year on a variety of different metrics that are part of our overall program evaluation procedures.
Overall student learning is measured by their approved completion of a Professional Portfolio and passing of either the RCP's Comprehensive Exam or the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) Exam (see www.crccertification.com), for which we have a 100% pass rate. Additionally, 100% of our recent graduates are currently employed full-time in the field working in a variety of service delivery systems including the public and private sectors, community rehabilitation facilities, academic and university services, and the Veteran's Administration. On average, the majority of our students obtain employment within the first 6-months after graduation. Additionally, graduates are currently eligible for counselor licensure and a small number of our graduates have pursued and successfully achieved it.
We generally have one full-time tenured faculty member who also serves as Program Coordinator and one full-time tenure-track faculty member who deliver the CACREP accredited graduate curriculum. We also have five adjunct faculty members who may assist with course delivery. Additionally, the RCP offers a general education undergraduate course that is taught by three adjunct faculty members. The average instructor rating for Rehabilitation Counseling courses for the current academic year is 4.75 out of 5.0. The current grade point average of the students currently enrolled is 3.7 out 4.0.
