Application for admission to the School of Nursing is a separate process in addition to being admitted to the University. Admission to the University must be completed prior to applying for admission to the SON. Please see Admission to the University for more information.
After admission to the University and successful completion (grade of C or above) of prerequisite and support courses, an application may be submitted to the SON. Students wishing to apply for admission should obtain an application from the SRC or the SON office. The completed application must be submitted to the SON Undergraduate Program Committee (UPC) by the third Friday of fall semester classes for admission spring semester. Students should contact the SON for specific deadline dates.
Transfer courses/credits must be evaluated by the Office of Admissions at MSU. Transfer students must attach a copy of all transcripts and credit evaluations to the SON application. Please request credit evaluations early, since the admissions office receives many requests and needs at least two weeks to complete credit evaluations. For further assistance, please contact the SRC. The SON is very eager to assist students in the application process.
All prerequisite and support courses must be taken for a letter grade; P/N is not acceptable. Achievement at the 2.5 level and completion of all prerequisite credits does not guarantee admission to the major. The Undergraduate Program Committee reviews applications from all students and considers cumulative GPA and prerequisite GPA (grade point average for all prerequisite courses) as factors to determine ranking for admission. Screening criteria are reviewed annually and are available upon application.
The LPN Option student must have practiced full time as a licensed practical nurse for at least one year in the last five years. Practicing LPN Option students must submit a letter of reference from a current supervisor to validate clinical competence. The letter should address clinical skill competence, safety and management of physiologic and psychosocial issues. If the reference from a current supervisor is not satisfactory, two more references will be required. If the LPN Option student has not practiced as a licensed practical nurse for one year full time in the last five years, the student may be required to complete additional clinical hours under the supervision of SON faculty.
Computer competency may be obtained by successfully completing Nursing 110, Nursing Perspectives. If students transfer N110, they will need to pass a competency exam administered by the SON.
