Athletic Coaching Minor

Q: What can I do with an athletics coaching minor?
A: The athletics coaching minor provides students academic preparation to coach at any level.
Q: I need to take HP 451 or HP 372. When will they be offered?
A: HP 451 Principles of Coaching and HP 372 Exercise Science for Coaches are offered in the Summer only.
Q: Are there any prerequisits for the coaching practicum course?
A: Download the HP 482 Coaching Practicum Application. Students must fill out the application prior to registering for the course.
Q: How do I get my coaching certification?
A: The Minnesota State Hight School League (MSHSL) offers a head coach certification program. Individuals who want to be a high school head coach in Minnesota can now obtain the head coach credential through the MSHSL Head Coaches Course.
Coaches will receive instruction and education in: Fundamentals of Coaching, Sports First Aid, and League Rules and Policies. Individuals who successfully complete this program will meet MS122A.3, the state statute for head coaches.
Each high school coach will now have his or her own page on the Coaches Clipboard, an administrative page dedicated to each high school coach. This page will allow coaches to have sport-specific information tailored to the sports he or she coaches. It will include a comprehensive history of the coach’s professional development and it will provide timely information to the coaches from the League.

* Students wanting to take these theory courses will need to see the instructor for permission to register.
Prerequisites: Coaching Theory in sport wanting practicum or member of an intercollegiate team for 2 years in sport wanting practicum and First Aid and Athletic Training.
Note: A practicum student must participate as a coach in a school situation for the full sport season.
