Minor Curriculum

Each student's specific requirements are determined by the curriculum set forth in his or her declared academic bulletin.  Copies of the current and past academic bulletins are available on the Undergraduate Bulletins page.  Descriptions of each course can be found in the academic bulletin.  Please meet with your academic advisor to discuss the frequency of course offerings, course waivers, and/or course substitutions.

Requirements for the Alcohol and Drug Studies Minor (2012-2013 Bulletin and Newer)

 

Track One: Alcohol and Drug Counseling Licensure Track (39 Credits)

This track includes the Alcohol and Drug Studies Core Courses and the Internship. This track fulfills the academic requirements necessary to pursue licensure in the State of Minnesota as an alcohol and drug counselor.

Alcohol and Drug Studies Required Core Courses (27 credits)

• HLTH 225: Introduction to Alcohol and Drug Studies (3 credits)
            *Prerequisite for applying the ADS Application and Screening Process

• HLTH 406: Ethics and Professionalism for Addictions Professionals (3 credits)
            *Prerequisite: HLTH 225

• HLTH 407: Pharmacology for Alcohol and Drug Professionals (3 credits)
            *Prerequisite: HLTH 225

• HLTH 456: Assessment and Diagnosis of Substance Use Disorders (3 credits)
            *Prerequisite: HLTH 225

• HLTH 469: Co-Occurring Disorders (3 credits)
            *Prerequisite: HLTH 225

• CSP 470: Group Procedures (3 credits)
            *Prerequisite: CSP 471

• CSP 471: Interpersonal Helping Skills (3 credits)

• CSP 473: Counseling the Chemically Dependent Family (3 credits)
            *Prerequisite: CSP 471

• SOC 465: Law and Chemical Dependency (3 credits)

Alcohol and Drug Studies Internship Process (12 credits)

• HLTH 497: Internship - Alcohol and Drug Studies
            *All core coursework must be completed prior to registering for the internship
            *Successful completion of the ADS Application and Screening process required
            *Permission for registration is required from the ADS Coordinator

 

Track Two: Alcohol and Drug Studies Track (27 Credits)

This track includes only the Alcohol and Drug Studies Core Courses. Without the internship experience, students will not be eligible for licensure in the state of Minnesota as an alcohol and drug counselor.
