On December 16, 2008 twelve Minnesota State University (MSU)Junior and Senior Athletic Training Students visited the TRIA Orthopaedic Center in Bloomington. The visit was arranged by MSU alumni Mr. Paul Bruning (MS, 1994) who is TRIA's Sports Medicine Program Representative. In addition to his presentation to the students (What Does an Athletic Trainer Do at TRIA?) Mr. Bruning arranged for the students to observe orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Bradley Nelson performing an arthroscopic surgical decompression of a shoulder; a lecture on assessment of the unstable shoulder by orthopaedic surgery fellow Dr. Kip Wilkins; followed by an evening in the TRIA BioSkills Laboratory hosted by orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Jonathan Braman. It was an outstanding learning session for the students who attended (as for Dr.s Sexton and Mackey!).
Mr. Paul Bruning presents to the students as the surgical team preps the patient for surgery.

Athletic training students watch Dr. Bradley Nelson perform surgery. Dr. Nelson was able to communicate with the students during the procedure and answered many questions about the patient and the procedure.

Dr. Kip Wilkins presents assessment and management of shoulder instabilities to the athletic training students.

Dr. Jonathan Braman demonstrates surgical techniques on a cadaver for the athletic training students and orthopaedic fellows. Dr. Braman allows the athletic training students to "get up close and personal" with the anatomy and the procedure.

Dr. Braman reviews anatomy and different surgical procedures with the students. The athletic training students checkout the surgical anatomy.

Athletic training students get more hands–on experience.

The Students and faculty want to thank TRIA Orthopaedic Center, especially Dr. Nelson, Dr. Braman, Dr. Wilkins, and Mr. Bruning for their time and expertise!
